“That’s how I hold it,” the actress said, revealing that she might not have been considered for the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, had Spider-Man 4 gone ahead. She said,

The way I hold it is if that movie had gotten made, I don’t know if I would’ve been considered because I don’t know if (Nolan) would’ve said, ‘No, no, she’s occupied in another universe.

The Oscar-winning actress further reflected on the unpredictability of having an acting career, saying,

As an actor, you don’t know this on day one, but you learn to just go, ‘You know what? The right role finds the right person, and sometimes it’s you and sometimes it’s not, so when it doesn’t happen just trust deeper and keep going.

Before Sony decided to reboot the Spider-Man franchise with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, there were plans for a fourth installment in Sam Raimi’s series.

This film was in discussions to introduce John Malkovich as Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat. However, those plans were ultimately scrapped before they could be realized.

In an interview with Vulture, filmmaker Sam Raimi discussed the canceled Spider-Man 4, confirming that he had indeed considered Anne Hathaway for the role of Black Cat. “I loved what she was doing with the auditions for Spider-Man 4,” he said.

The filmmaker admitted that he was disappointed with how Spider-Man 3 turned out and wanted the next installment to end on a high note.

I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all. But I couldn’t get the script together in time.

However, as he struggled to finalize a satisfactory script, he ultimately decided to step back, advising the studio to proceed with their plans for a reboot.

I said to Sony, “I don’t want to make a movie that is less than great, so I think we shouldn’t make this picture. Go ahead with your reboot, which you’ve been planning anyway.”

Despite the cancellation of the fourth installment, there have been ongoing discussions about bringing Maguire back as Spider-Man, especially following his cameo in Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Dark Knight Rises is available to watch on Max.
