Epic Games EVP Saxs Persson recently revealed more details about the upcoming Disney experience in Fortnite during an interview.
Epic Games is bringing one of the biggest events and experiences to Fortnite, could be on a theme park level! Epic Games has shared more details about the Disney experience in Fortnite, which was initially announced earlier this year. Epic Games EVP Saxs Persson shared these details in a recent interview with The Verge. He noted the importance of protecting Disney’s IPs and the Disney-exclusive experience within the game engine.
Disney and Fortnite have a long-shared history with numerous brand and franchise collaborations, and this season’s Absolute Doom theme focuses on Marvel characters. In early 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games to acquire a stake in the company, which paved the way for a new Disney x Fortnite gaming and entertainment experience.
The reveal trailer provided a conceptual look at what this experience could offer, rather than showcasing fully developed content. On the gaming side, fans will be able to create and play their own Disney-themed content within Fortnite. Additionally, Fortnite plans to feature Disney shows and movies, allowing players to watch them directly in-game. Imagine Disney+ integrated seamlessly into Fortnite—an ambitious pitch indeed. The trailer also hinted at a shopping feature, which likely refers to unlocking Disney character cosmetics in Fortnite, allowing players to personalize their gameplay with iconic characters.
Persson updated that the mutual agreement for a shared experience in Fortnite is beneficial for both Epic Games and Disney. He explained how this partnership was one that made good business sense, so Disney would not have to make a similar game of its own. Persson explained that players can access the Disney universe either through “the Disney front door or the Fortnite front,” suggesting there will be two separate menus in the game or client.
One of the most crucial aspects of the Disney and Fortnite collaboration is protecting Disney’s intellectual property (IP). Epic Games has previously implemented age ratings for certain Fortnite experiences, and in this new collaboration, certain cosmetics may be restricted by parents or tied to the player’s age. The new Disney shop within Fortnite will offer specific Disney skins that are exclusive to certain game modes, ensuring that characters are used in appropriate contexts.
Persson emphasized that companies like Disney can control the use of their IP and set clear boundaries. For example, if a Snow White skin were released, it wouldn’t make sense for her to appear in Battle Royale wielding Micro Dual SMGs. This approach underscores the importance of maintaining Disney’s brand integrity and safety in the Disney x Fortnite experience. Based on the D23 livestream from a few months ago, the next crossover event is expected to focus on Disney villains, further expanding this exciting collaboration.
