Starfield was Bethesda’s first new IP in decades. The expectations placed on the game were quite high since its initial reveal, as it was Todd Howard’s magnum opus. The game was supposed to redefine the RPG genre and space exploration in games altogether.
However, upon its release, the game proved to be an absolute bust. Even though Bethesda tried making amends with this year’s Shattered Space DLC, its plans didn’t work out, as the game has unfortunately made it to the “biggest regret” purchases of the year for millions of gamers around the globe.
With Starfield, Bethesda and Todd Howard managed to achieve their goal. However, just like the actual outer space, the majority of the title is boring, empty, and not worth bothering with.
The game would’ve been fine if it had compelling main quests and characters to carry this emptiness. However, it didn’t, and even its $30 expansion failed to salvage things. Not only did the DLC bring nothing meaningful to the table, but it also gave us even more bugs in classic Bethesda fashion.
Over on r/gaming, many in the community consider it to be Howard’s biggest failure and regrettable purchase.

However, the players’ frustrations aren’t just limited to the space-RPG. Even though EA and DICE have tried fixing Battlefield 2042 with various updates and patches, players still consider the game to be a flop even in its current stage, and not worth the purchase even in 2024.
The Callisto Protocol hasn’t escaped criticism either. The highly-anticipated game from Dead Space creator Glen Schofield didn’t hit the mark upon its release and, to this day, still doesn’t offer replay value and meaningful content. Its only positive is its visuals and themes.
The the most regrettable purchase of the year is Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. Upon its release, it was met with incredible praise from critics and fans alike. However, soon, the hype faded away, and players realized its matchmaking was absolutely terrible, and the competitive side wasn’t enjoyable.
If there’s one game that everyone agrees that they shouldn’t have purchased, it’s Diablo 4. Sure, it’s the golden goose for Blizzard right now, but there’s no denying the fact that it lacks the depth we’ve seen in the franchise before. What’s worse is its monetization tactics that will drive any player absolutely insane.
Every gamer knows about the tragedy that was No Man’s Sky upon release. Hello Games’ initial promises got everyone right on the edge of their seats. However, upon its debut, the game was just simply a disaster. Even PlayStation’s top executives bashed the developer.
Hello Games could’ve abandoned the ship and cashed out. However, they stuck to the game and delivered major updates and patches over the next couple of years. Today, the title has “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, which is quite a turnaround.
No Man’s Sky proved that a comeback can be made against all odds, and even Starfield can follow the same trajectory. All Bethesda and Howard need to do is divert some of their resources towards further development and fixing of the space RPG.
Seriously, it has incredible potential, and it would be a shame if it never reaches the height it deserves.
