Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy May Be Headed To Xbox, But There Is Currently No Active Development

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy may be headed to Xbox, though there is currently no active development taking place.

During the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast, co-host Jez Corden stated that we are going to get something Final Fantasy related at Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2024 event. He has heard that the whole slate is on the docket for an Xbox port, including the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy XVI, and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. He also mentioned that a lot of people have been wondering about the possibility of Sony having locked down the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy for good as a console exclusive. Based on what he has heard, this is not the case, and the trilogy will eventually come to Xbox. He doesn’t know when it will happen, and whether it will be in the first wave of Final Fantasy ports on Xbox.

Meanwhile, RPG Site’s Alex Donaldson, who has been a reliable source on information from Square Enix Japan in the past, took to gaming enthusiast forum Reset Era to comment on Corden’s claim. He said that, to his knowledge, there is presently no active development on an Xbox version of Final Fantasy VII Remake or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. That said, he also believes that Square Enix will eventually port the trilogy to Xbox.

Based on Donaldson’s guess, Square Enix will likely focus on completing and shipping the 3rd part in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, and then look towards working on an Xbox and perhaps a Nintendo Switch 2 port. He mentioned that, under its new leadership, Square Enix’s attitude towards judging exclusivity on a per-game basis, where PlayStation and Nintendo platforms are the default and Xbox is an option, has softened.

Going forward, Donaldson expects most new titles to be available on Xbox unless there’s a good argument or cash incentive against it. However, he cautioned that this change in attitude is recent, and that a policy shift like this takes time to trickle down. According to him, there will be unannounced Square Enix games that have been in development for quite some time and will not launch on Xbox, as their inception predates the new CEO and the strategic changes.
