The 3 Men Behind Arcane: League of Legends’ $250 Million Gamble Gave Us the Highest Rated TV Show of All Time

The amount of creative freedom Riot has granted the Arcane writers has been refreshing, even though the video game League of Legends, on which Arcane is based, has a vast and rich pool of lore from which to draw inspiration. Although this can lead to some inconsistencies in the canon, it improves the show because the writers are free to choose which aspects of the lore they want to adhere to.

Following the lore can occasionally result in the confirmation of intriguing fan theories as well. As a result, the series went on to become the highest-rated TV show of all time. And surprisingly, this accolade came through the hands of three rookies, who never had any experience in putting out TV series.

Credible insider Kaelum has posted a huge Twitter thread with a bunch of information about Arcane. According to him, three unknown authors received $250 million from League of Legends to create a Netflix series and naturally, everyone deemed them to be as crazy. However, despite the brilliance of Season 2, we might not get Season 3.

After six years, Arcane has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated series ever. These three unknown personalities were an Esports commentator, a video game writer, and a music producer. Despite being familiar with the video game world, none of them had any prior experience in the world of TV series and movies.

Two of them were Christian Linke and Alex Yee. However, this inexperience is the exact reason the series has become famous. Due to the lack of experience, the author trio didn’t hold back from experimenting and tried to implement a new approach: 45-minute episodes, non-linear storytelling, and minute-long silent scenes, which we rarely see in other TV shows. That is why viewers got a different taste this time with Arcane.

How Did Arcane Become So Famous?

Arcane actually gave the fans a new perspective on how a TV series should be made out of an actual game. This couldn’t have been possible with those inexperienced hands, as veterans would have never taken the risk of experimenting with a high-volume game like League of Legends. And that is why the series never had to look back.

Firstly, the game built complex characters. Many times, shows fail miserably to connect viewers emotionally with them, but here in Arcane, those characters never seem fictional. No character in the show just suddenly appeared on the screen, each of them had their own backstories and build-ups.

Another massive reason for the success of the TV series is its storytelling. Every scene was rewritten at least twenty times, altering even the smallest details and dialogue until it felt just right. Each episode has multiple plots interwoven into one another.

The writers did not resort to immediately classifying the characters into good and evil camps. No side was entirely good or evil because they all had unique histories and goals and as a result, you never know who to support or what will happen next when you watch it.

Arcane has literally made history if you talk about TV series based on video games. And that is why, to carry forward the legacy, the showrunners have assured that the Arcane universe is expanding, as this is just the beginning.
