Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia Is Fun Even Without Context
There are a surprising number of official hololive Vtuber manga series out there! Magical Girl Holowitches and HoloX Meeting are among them. The thing about some of those, however, is that context can matter. It helps if you have an idea who the Vtubers behind the characters are, especially in the case of the one based on Secret Society holoX. Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia , which Square Enix released outside Japan, is different. While it does help if you know who folks like Fubuki Shirakami, Mio Ookami, and Ayame Nakiri are, the way it’s handled and execution means it works just as well if you’re totally unfamiliar and looking for a series that almost has a Touhou type of vibe and involves kami protecting a country.
Editor’s Note: There will be some mild spoilers for the first volume of the Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia Hololive Vtubers manga below.
Yamato is a land in which kami and humans live in a symbiotic relationship. The humans generate and help maintain aura. Kami need that energy in order to grow and develop their strength. They, in turn, use their powers to protect the humans who live alongside them. For example, they might use their abilities to remove Stigma, negative aura, from humans to protect them from corruption and transformation. However, while there are kami who are benevolent and air the community, yokai that absorbed aura will use it maliciously and cause corruption and dissent, feeding off of the chaos. Fubuki and Mio are two such kami, and Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia follows as we watch them use their abilities to assist in daily incidents in town as well as take part in a kidnapping case with malevolent yokai behind it.

One reason Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia works so well even if you have no idea who the Hololive Vtubers Fubuki and Mio are is that the series is more loosely based on the concept of who they are, rather than the actual individuals. The Holoearth Chronicles series is a spin-off and alternate reality. There may be some personality traits reflected here and the character designs match, but this is an entirely original story that also happens to involve “them.” It’s the same reason why the game Fubuki: Zero in on Holoearth , which is based on the same premise and scenario, would work for anyone.
Another reason is that the Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia manga is fantastic at establishing Fubuki and Mio as original characters. While the first few pages do start in medias res, with Fubuki and Mio in the midst of fighting the oni Ayame, it immediately goes into a short tale establishing who Fubuki is as a character. It shows how she’s a Kami, that her role is to defend Yamato, specifically the town right near her shrine, and that she will remove negative Stigmas from people that could make them behave hurtfully or even turn into monsters. At the same time, it shows she’s a down-to-earth gamer who is quite casual, to the point where she might forget her very necessary sword at Mio’s place or prefer instant udon to the fresh, homemade kind.
The premise also means that the Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia is more about building up these two characters, their friendships, and their abilities as they take on situations to help the people of Yamato. While there may be references to the activities and lore for the Hololive Vtubers in the manga, such as Fubuki’s Oruyanke mascot appearing or her being mistaken for a cat rather than a fox, this is completely self-contained. We miss nothing if we don’t watch them. This is all about the personal development of these two characters based on the performers. And, frankly, the development of them is quite good. Especially Mio, her backstory, and her powers once her and Fubuki head off on a mission to save some missing children.
I also mentioned it felt Touhou Project like earlier, and I feel like that’s another reason it works. Shrine maidens who are young women with supernatural powers dealing with yokai? A setting inspired by a more historic type period in Japan? While this is a Hololive Vtuber manga, it can offer more of a supernatural monster-of-the-week, incident-resolving atmosphere to it.
The Hololive Vtuber vibes are strong in Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia, yes, but the manga is also super accessible. The characters and story are handled in such a way that you don’t need any experience with the performers to enjoy it. It can help with some inside jokes and references. But it’s a really well-handled, stand-alone project.
Volume 1 of Holoearth Chronicles Side:E Yamato Phantasia is available now, and Square Enix will release the second volume of the manga inspired by Hololive Vtubers Fubuki Shirakami, Mio Ookami, and Ayame Nakiri on December 2, 2025.

Nodoka Will Graduate From Hololive
VTuber Harusaki Nodoka will leave hololive in late September 2025. She talked about it on stream, as well as uploaded a statement in both English and Japanese onto her official Twitter account.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-kQrU8JuzY
According to her statement, she has grown as a person during her time at hololive. It was because of hololive that she was able to rekindle passions she had lost before she entered the company, but because of that, she wants to give careful thought to her life’s goals and direction, as well as herself. She felt it would be insincere to the staff, listeners, and other hololive talents if she continued to stream while she can’t fully commit her mind and attention to it. So after a lot of thinking, she decided to, in her words, “bring this chapter to a close.” She will continue to support hololive as a fan.
Harusaki Nodoka debuted in April 2022, though is not a full talent. She is a staff member with a 2D model, much like her mentor and fellow former staff member, Friend A (A-chan). Because of this, she doesn’t have a dedicated account. Instead, she mostly posts to the “holoAN room” channel . As of the time of writing, it has 118,000 subscribers.
Harusaki Nodoka will leave hololive at the end of September 2025.

Review: Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda Is Casual and Fun
We don’t get many Hanafuda games outside Japan. When one does appear, even if its made for a niche audience, it can be a big deal. That’s the case for Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda from Gemdrops, one of the latest holo indie titles, as it pairs up Vtubers from Cover with the card game. It’s such a solid showing, especially since it has an online multiplayer that supports cross-play with the console release and is quite well-populated, that anyone interested in the card game should consider at the very least trying out its demo.
The Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda campaign (yes, there’s a story mode) follows Vtubers Nakiri Ayame, Ookami Mio, Sakura Miko, and Shirakami Fubuki as they prepare for a tournament, then get sucked into themed worlds based on the months and flower suits in the deck. It’s not an earth-shattering story, but it is quite cute and could be helpful when easing people unfamiliar with the card game into the experience. Especially since it also introduces the Holo Awase ruleset with power-ups tied to specific generations for claiming cards that show certain performers on them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q_BRkjFwRQ
It’s the actual card game that matters here, and Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda is great at providing that experience with a Vtuber coating. In addition to the campaign, you can play offline or online. The rulesets are traditional Koi-Koi, a variant of that with power-ups that include buffs and debuffs called Holo Awase, and Oicho-Kabu. (You don’t have to fire up one of the Yakuza games for rounds of that last one anymore!) Cards are very clearly presented on the table, information is laid out well, and it’s easy to check set lists or toggle help on and off.
The online multiplayer impressed me too! I played on a handheld gaming PC, and I had no trouble finding matches. When I did get into one, it was responsive with no lag. It also didn’t take too long to find fellow players, though I did make sure I played around Japanese time zones to ensure I wouldn’t be alone. Cross-play seemed competent. The only qualm is that it is a bit of a rudimentary multiplayer mode, as there’s no ranked option. Given this is part of that indie line, I suppose I understand. And, in the time I was playing, Gemdrops did end up patching it to penalize people who would ditch matches if it looked like they were losing, so at least the developers seem like they’re keeping an eye out for feedback.
Images via Gemdrops
Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda also looks so great. The cards all feature Hololive Vtubers, but at the same time nail the classic Hanafuda card aesthetic. It looks lovely. I’d buy physical cards with those types of prints. (You know, if Trump tariffs and the end of de minimis exemption weren’t making those kinds of those impulse purchases near impossible.) If you aren’t a Vtuber fan, you can also opt for more traditional looking cards, but I really recommend going with the themed approach since they’re so pretty.
The downside to Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda is, while enjoyable, I didn’t feel like I someone who picked it up would end up learning to play the card game well by playing it. The tutorial is comprehensive, but it doesn’t really get into learning about why you should play certain cards where or when you should try for certain groupings. Instead, it will just remind you that you’ll see automatically if cards could be played and used to claim via outlines when that option is enabled. There can also be hints about special moves. So as long as you’re placing cards as suggested in a way that let you keep building up collections you claimed, you could be fine and have a great time. But if you do already know how to play, it’s a fantastic way of getting into the card game. Ironically, I feel like a trailer for it did a better job of explaining how to play the card game.
Image via Gemdrops
Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda is a pleasant, casual Hanafuda experience that is great for anyone interested in the card game, not just Vtuber fans. It covers a few different rulesets. Its original Holo Awase option with power-ups adds a little extra flash. It also seemed like there’s a pretty active online multiplayer scene tied to it. And since there are different card themes, you could swap to that, largely ignore the campaign, and enjoy more typical Hanafuda experiences instead.
Hololive Holo’s Hanafuda is available for the PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch .

New Hololive Vtuber Games Are Holo Hidden and GuraQuest
Cover announced the two new Holo Indie Vtuber games starring Hololive performers are the platformer GuraQuest and hidden object game Holo Hidden: My Lovely Fans Can't Be This Hidden . The former is out now and is free. The latter debuts on Steam on August 29, 2025, and a price isn’t available yet.
GuraQuest is a Lee-pic game that’s actually been around for quite some time, and it’s been speedrun before. You might have seen it on Newgrounds . The game involves going through stages as various original Hololive English Myth Vtubers like Gawr Gura, Amelia Watson, Calliope Mori, Kiara Takanashi, and Ninomae Ina’nis. So if you’re playing as Gura, she can jump and double jump. Once you get her trident, she can dash with J and, if you charge it, get over gaps or even slam into walls to stick in place.
As for Holo Hidden: My Lovely Fans Can't Be This Hidden, it is an entirely new hidden object game from toMoMI Games with 12 scenes featuring Hololive Vtubers and mascots tied to them. (One of them is a bonus level.) Your goal will be to find various items in each one. There will also be a photo mode and an ability to color in scenes. To help show how that works and tease some of the performers present in scenes, there’s a trailer showing it off.
Here's how that Hololive Vtuber game looks:
