Blizzard’s announcement to bring back 6v6 matches in Overwatch 2 for Season 14 has left fans with mixed reactions. When Blizzard released Overwatch 2, it fundamentally altered the game’s dynamics by switching to a 5v5 format. This change was supposed to smoothen out the gameplay and feel of the game.
Blizzard’s willingness to experiment with 6v6 again raises questions about the devs’ long-term vision for Overwatch 2. While some fans are excited to revisit the old format, others are more skeptical, seeing this as evidence that the original switch might have been unnecessary.
In July, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller first hinted at testing 6v6 again to assess if the format could coexist with the current 5v5 setup. The primary reason for Overwatch’s shift to 5v5 in its sequel was to provide a more balanced, strategic experience by reducing the number of tank heroes per team.
this is so funny because if 6v6 ends up being permanent again then what exactly was the point of overwatch 2 https://t.co/QrmdkABo9z

Blizzard’s Season 14 tests will feature two versions of the 6v6 format in December. The first, launching a week into the season, uses a Min 1, Max 3 rule, which requires a minimum of one tank, one support, and one damage hero but allows up to three players per role.
Midway through the season, the second 6v6 test will introduce a classic 2-2-2 role lock, mirroring the original format from Overwatch. These formats could hint at a possible shift, and Blizzard plans to gauge fan reception and engagement closely before deciding whether 6v6 should become a permanent option.
I hope it comes back and people see how dogshit 6v6 is. But this is sad regardless that they're actually bringing it back 💀

While 6v6 tests might seem like a step toward offering more diverse gameplay, many fans argue that Overwatch 2’s identity feels muddled as a result. The switch from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2 came with promises of new things like a PvE mode that would justify the sequel’s existence.
Blizzard is truly a master class in how to destroy a legacy. It would be difficult to screw up as bad as blizzard has, even on purpose.

But this feature was quietly removed in one of the more controversial decisions by the devs. Now, fans think testing a 6v6 mode seems like a weak attempt to re-engage a dwindling player base without addressing community concerns.
The announcement has particularly agitated players who feel they were never given a choice about the game’s fundamental structure. By replacing the original 5v5 format entirely, Blizzard essentially forced a new gameplay style onto its fanbase.
there was literally no point to ow2, it's kinda funny and sad

Despite Blizzard’s assurance that the 6v6 modes won’t affect the current 5v5 structure, fans are already talking. Especially because of one dev’s words. In response to fan feedback, Game Director Aaron Keller has hinted that if the 6v6 trials are popular, Blizzard might consider keeping both formats in the game.
needs to go back to overwatch and bring back loot boxes

Many see the constant testing of formats as a signal that Blizzard has yet to settle on a definitive vision for Overwatch 2, even two years post-launch.
If Blizzard fails to optimize both formats, it could also result in a fragmented player base, with some players preferring 5v5 and others preferring 6v6.
In the end, players are left questioning what Blizzard’s vision for Overwatch 2 truly is. The game’s ongoing identity crisis has been nothing but bad for the community and even if Blizzard is grasping at straws, the community needs to be heard.
