“Perhaps the sad experience of Overwatch speaks to me…”: Marvel Rivals Hasn’t Even Released and Some Fans Worry It’s Following the Same Path

Live-service games like the upcoming Marvel Rivals the popular Apex Legends, and Fortnite, have many things in common, but their ever-evolving state is arguably one of the most important factors. This can be both a good and bad thing.

Even before the Marvel game has had a chance to come out and be judged by the public, however, one Redditor expressed extreme worries that it’ll be plagued by the same issue that other games in the category supposedly had.

One Redditor Has a Controversial Opinion on Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals can’t seem to escape the comparisons to Overwatch, all the way from its very concept to its visuals, gameplay, and characters.

With the conversation being overdone, people are now worried about the next thing—character buffs and nerfs.

Worried about the Nerf/Buff

OP expresses extreme stress at the thought of Marvel Rivals following the same pattern as Blizzard’s game, in the sense of constantly buffing and nerfing their heroes.

They’ve reportedly seen videos of players offering their ideas for the game, and are worried the developers might implement them.

OP mentions Mercy as an example, who, in the early days, was able to resurrect the entire team with her Ultimate, so long as they were in range. After many reworks, she can now resurrect a single teammate with her skill, which is on a cooldown.

Calling this the torment of Mercy by the developers, OP hates this change and hopes the developers for Marvel Rivals don’t follow a similar pattern.

OP Might Not Have a Solid Point Here

There’s a reason characters in games like these are constantly buffed and nerfed. As one reply eloquently puts it:

One reply doesn’t bother explaining to OP why their argument is incredibly flawed and simply warns them.

Overwatch players will know that Mercy’s team-wide resurrect was incredibly OP and unfair, and changing it for a single teammate on a cooldown is a fair trade.

OP’s argument does not work in this context. Stagnancy in live service games is akin to death.

When you’ve got a large and growing player base, you want to make sure you’re constantly catering to all the new wants and needs that pop-up, as well as adding things in that players don’t even know they want yet.

So, when you’re constantly adding new content, be it new maps, characters, mechanics, and so forth, you want to make sure the systems already in place don’t get left in the dust. This includes the characters.

In an ideal scenario, every character is good at their role. Rather than a meta team build, players should be able to react to opponents by picking viable counters. This can’t happen if characters are not balanced.

What is your opinion on this discourse? Are OP’s fears valid, or is their mindset unhealthy for Marvel Rivals? We’d love to hear your opinion in the comments below.
