Matt Reeves has come out with a new update about his version of the Batman mythos, where Robert Pattinson essays the role of the Dark Knight, joining James Gunn’s DCU. It seems that there might be some negotiations in that regard still underway, despite Reeves having made it clear early on that his version of Batman will remain separate from the DCU.
While there was a section of the fandom that was very taken by the idea that Robert Pattinson’s Batman was in the same universe as David Corenswet’s Superman, there are others that rightly believe that this would be a bad move for the character. Further, having Pattinson be the Batman of the DCU might just open up a slew of problems for all that James Gunn has promised for the DCU.
James Gunn has announced a slew of projects that are directly tied to the Batman IP. To begin with, the director announced Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which would feature Damian Wayne as Batman’s Robin.
This would mean that Batman would be a little older in the DCU, having cycled through the likes of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake. Further, there have been projects announced like the as-of-now untitled Teen Titans film, and a Dynamic Duo animated series, which would follow Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
Given that Robert Pattinson’s Batman is very, very, very young, having not even adopted Dick Grayson to become his first Robin, a lot of stories could hang in the balance should Robert Pattinson join the DCU as Batman.
From what fans had seen in Creature Commandos, it seemed unlikely that Robert Pattinson would make the jump to the DCU, but with more and more negotiations and vague details being revealed, fans might want to gear up to see the Reeves-verse collide with the DCU. Despite the director having said before that his Batman will be separate from the DCU, it seems that there are some changes occurring behind the scenes.
Despite a slew of Batman-adjacent projects already announced in the DCU, James Gunn had already made it clear that there is a chance that they will never see the light of day. The writer/director had made it very clear that just because a project is announced, does not mean that it will see the light of day. It all depends on how the script for the film or show turns out, which could be the difference between a project going forward or falling apart.
Robert Pattinson‘s Batman joining the DCU might lead to a slew of projects being canceled or restructured. One way in which the Titans film can be done is to have Batman’s first entry into the DCU introduce Robin, which would then lead to the Titans film. Of course, this would mean that the Dynamic Duo animated project will have to be delayed, but Gunn might just scrap the two projects to make room for something completely different.
