Why GTA 6 Should Be Wary of the Perils of Overhyping a Game Prior To Release

When the matter’s about a video game like GTA 6, it is natural to see the hype surrounding it. That is both good and bad. If a game meets those expectations, then it’s definitely worth it. But what if it fails? That will be a pure heartbreaker.

There is no release date announced officially for the Rockstar’s game but fans are already celebrating being ‘one year’ away from the launch. They are full of hope on this one. But setting the bar too may just not be feasible if things go sideways.

Let’s Take a Look Back at What Happens With Overhyping Something

GTA 6 is perhaps the most hyped-up video game in the market’s history. That’s understandable when a beloved series gets a new product having a range of qualities. The graphics, the largest map in the series-ever, new mechanics, and more.

And there will be violence in GTA 6 for sure; it’s up to the users how ethically they will be playing. But the hype being created for the game can be devastating if the users don’t like it. It has happened with other video games before.

Even the biggest games that received ample time for their development cycle have flopped. Take Starfield, for that matter; it took eight years to come into existence and we can see what happened in there, nothing.

Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 2042, No Man’s Sky, and more were supposed to be some great video games; they failed to entertain the audience too. Although No Man’s Sky managed to make the mends and is now a better game. I want to say the same for Battlefield 2042 but there’s nothing left to give it a turning point.

And it’s not just GTA 6, but video games including Half Life 3 and Beyond Good & Evil 2 have long been rumored to be in development. They’ve got a lot to live up to. And when the top guns like GTA 6 are arriving, fans are likely to invest themselves in it more. It’s not going to be a small game as we know it.

Even The Last of Us 2 wasn’t immune to this; fans discourse surrounding it became adversarial. However, it was a commercial success and became one of the fastest-selling video games for PlayStation 4. It was important to include this. Creating hype just backfires and hits harder than when there are fewer expectations.

GTA 6 Must Continue the Tradition by Keeping Discontentment at Bay

When it comes to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series, disappointment is far from the community’s entry zone as far as it’s history is concerned. Mainline video games have simply captivated the audience for years. San Andreas is still a treat for a bored soul.

And then there’s the good old Vice City, which will, sort of, be the setting of the next mainline game in the series. From 2D to 3D to realism, every time there was a release. But there were controversies. Well, that’s natural when the game allows for violence against normal civilians.

The trailer for the game does look like it is going to pull up the series entirely to a new level, should it do justice to what we saw in there. They better not pull a Watch Dogs or Spider-Man. That will really be heartbreaking. But then I believe the latest technology that has given us visual treats like Hellblade 2 and the upcoming Dragon Ball game, Sparking Zero.

Although it’s not all bad creating that hype. There’s good hype and bad hype. Watch Dogs and Spider-Man are the examples of the latter. People want truth; they need it. Otherwise, it’s all just marketing to sell a product. Maybe make a good one; you won’t really need advertising.

For example, Concord was all over my social media feeds whenever I opened Facebook for that mindless scrolling. And every time I saw the terms like ‘promoted’, or ‘sponsored’ for that matter, it didn’t really touch my soul. It somehow knew that was going to be a failed product, and we know what happened.

All we have got is a trailer and speculations as to when GTA 6 will arrive. We are waiting for it to create history. Please don’t disappoint us, Rockstar.
