Perhaps the Grinch ruined Christmas at Warner Bros., and now the studio is somewhat hellbent on wreaking havoc. Because right after Christmas, WB got busy making release date changes for next year and beyond. Funnily enough, the studio took the most audacious step of shifting Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman sequel to 2027, while offering Tom Cruise’s unnamed movie a 2026 release date.
Well, we understand that production for The Batman 2 isn’t scheduled to get started until late summer of 2025 and is set to be a VFX-heavy sequel, but despite all odds, a fall 2026 theatrical release seemed perfectly within reach. So why did Warner Bros. shift its release date, and instead offer Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled movie a 2026 deadline? Well, whatever the reason might be, right now, even Cruise’s movie doesn’t seem quite safe under WB’s indecisiveness.
Back in 2022, right after the COVID pandemic, Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson had become the first fire-breathing theatrical release for Warner Bros. Proving to be super successful, despite the ongoing superhero fatigue and people’s fear of visiting theaters after the fatal pandemic, the DC movie managed to make $369M at domestic and $765M at global box office (via The Numbers).
Further, the success of the film later spawned the Max series, The Penguin, which went on to become the third-most-watched HBO Max debut, after The House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. However, despite churning dollars and viewership for Warner Bros. Matt Reeves‘ The Batman sequel surprisingly got delayed from Oct. 2, 2026 to Oct. 1, 2027 release date.
According to reports from Deadline, in the most prolific move, the production company shockingly shifted The Batman 2’s release date to a 2027 window. Despite being ready with the cast and plot, Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel which seemed pretty feasible for the 2026 theatrical release got delayed, to fans’ disappointment. And surprisingly, Tom Cruise’s unnamed movie took over its place.
Yes, while Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2 got shifted to October 2027, despite having cast, crew, plot, and planning ready, Tom Cruise and director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie which doesn’t even have a name yet, got swapped to the October 2026 release date. This particular move from Warner Bros. left fans baffled to such an extent that people are worried even about Cruise’s film.
Considering how Warner Bros. has been making bizarre changes that don’t even seem necessary, fans expressed concerns about Tom Cruise‘s upcoming film and its release date. Although, as of recent reports, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie has gotten the positive update of dropping in theaters in 2026, netizens believe there’s a high possibility for the studio to change that date yet again.
According to the logline for the project (via IndieWire), the untitled movie from director Alejandro González Iñárritu, starring Tom Cruise follows “the most powerful man in the world”, who takes on a mission to prove he’s the savior to humanity before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything. Alongside Cruise as the lead of the film, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed are also set to appear.
