Ariana Grande’s Wicked is constantly defying all predictions that were made about its reception. From flying past the $26 million digital sales collection prediction in a single day to winning a Golden Globe award, the movie has been silencing doubters left and right.
It has also managed to snatch the attention and consequent praise from the critics, which is reflected in the number of nominations it has managed to earn. However, not everyone is happy with the achievements Wicked continues to accomplish as each day passes.
It has been long established that trolls will find reasons to spread hate on anything they dislike even if it does not make sense. Continuing that tradition, a faction of people disappointed by Wicked surpassing all previous predictions has taken to expressing their opinions on the internet in the most vile way possible.
Although Wicked was easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year, it was predicted to not perform well in the box office. Many people expressed doubts about Ariana Grande being fit for her role as Glinda, one of the major characters in the movie.
Although fans argued that the singer-actress is used to showcasing her terrific acting skills since her Nickelodeon days, it fell on deaf ears. Fascinatingly, the movie has been shattering all expectations since its release. It raked in more than $70 million during its first week of digital sales according to The Hollywood Reporter.
$26 million of which were made just on New Year’s Eve, when Wicked first became available on VOD services online. Interestingly, the digital release hasn’t stunted the movie’s theater collection at all. As of Wednesday, January 9th, it has managed to earn close to $700 million in worldwide box office collections.
The domestic market contributed the most to it, with more than $450 million earned from it. Wicked has managed to charm the critics as well ahead of award season. It had four nominations for Golden Globe awards, although only managed to win in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement 2025 category.
Ariana Grande’s movie is also leading the SAG and Critics Choice Awards 2025 nominations with five, and eleven nominations, respectively. As such, it seems more than likely that the Academy Awards will be looking at the movie with kind eyes as well.
Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with Wicked’s series of accomplishments. Although it is unwise to expect everyone to like the same things, most of the time the hatred trolls spread on the internet has no substantial grounding. Even though it is not the first time, actors or a movie is being targeted and being publicly vilified by haters, it is disappointing anyway.
Something similar occurred during The Little Mermaid’s release when trolls desperate to prove their point, came up with the most bizarre reasons to spread hate for the movie and Halle Bailey. Thankfully, though Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo has mostly been spared from the vile comments of haters. However, the movie itself has been taking the brunt of it.
Garbage sells quickly nowadays 🤣

Spoiler alert – no one likes the witch because she green and poor and acts black – but she's a sassy girlboss or some dumb shit so she probably wins everyone over by the end of the movie who fuckin cares.
Ridiculous for a trash film aimed at female coomers.

Although seeing people say such distasteful things on the internet is saddening, nothing can be done about it. On a positive note, the Wicked actors are in a celebratory mood despite it all, and their Golden Globes win is a major reason behind it.
If anything, they are looking forward to the Critics Choice Awards, where they are leading the nominee list, which is expected to take place on January 12th. Fans also seem excited for the award season, but even more so for the second movie, Wicked: For Good which is expected to release later this year.
Wicked is available to rent on Apple TV.
