Dandadan: Jiji’s Goofy Personality is Hiding a Dark Truth About Okarun’s Biggest Rival

Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains minor Dandadan Manga spoilers.

Life was good until Dandadan ended its run for the season on a painful cliffhanger, leaving us all in an excruciating wait. The introduction of the series was sensational, thoroughly entertaining, and surprising. The anime was undoubtedly a 2024 highlight, and none of this would have been possible without the characters.

All the characters that have been introduced so far are interesting, though not much has been revealed about Jiji. Yukinobu Tatsu constantly surprises fans by changing their initial impressions about almost everything. This is the same approach the mangaka will follow with Jiji as well. While he seems like a typical love rival at present, there’s so much more to him beyond his goofiness.

Jiji’s first impression and his real personality beyond it

Momo and Okarun instantly became fan-favorite characters in the first few episodes of Dandadan. Their compatibility with each other made their adventures fun to follow. Their strong individual personalities make their interactions a striking aspect of the series. Most fans were invested in their romantic dynamics, which made Jiji’s introduction somewhat annoying.

Jiji had many advantages over Okarun as a childhood friend of Momo. Even though Momo’s feelings for Okarun were evident, Jiji’s presence stalled their romantic development. The final episode of this cour barely introduced the arc that explores Jiji’s backstory. From here on out, Yukinobu Tatsu explores his character in great detail, revealing the tragic events he has been through and how they impacted him.

The entwinement with the supernatural and the situation with his parents has resulted in many sleepless nights. He masks his struggles with his goofy behavior and always maintains a light-hearted mood. This is an admirable aspect of his personality but it also makes one wonder how long he can keep it up.

On the contrary, the love rival impression doesn’t even last long in the anime as he gets along extremely well with Okarun. Even Okarun is able to interact with him regardless of the supposed threat he poses to his relationship with Momo. Beyond the ‘annoying’ persona, Jiji has his own set of struggles and he chooses to be a ray of positivity despite the hardships, which makes it easy for fans to resonate with him.

Anime lovers will experience a change of heart for Jiji

When Aira was first introduced in Dandadan anime, fans didn’t like how she treated Okarun and Momo. However, they gradually warmed up to her and the same thing is likely to happen with Jiji. The teaser for the upcoming cour shows that the mystery about his house will be explored.

We also see a glimpse of Jiji’s alternate version and it’ll be interesting to discover what that entails. After the first twelve episodes, it’s safe to say that the upcoming season is going to be even more hyped. More adventures await Okarun and Momo, along with Jiji this time around.

Dandadan is available to stream on Crunchyroll and the manga can be read on the MangaPlus app and website.
