Cyberpunk 2077 2.2 Update Is a Masterstroke Giving It a Redemption Arc Similar to No Man’s Sky

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most highly anticipated gaming titles of all time when it was released in 2020. The game took over eight years to develop, so the stakes were obviously high. However, after the release of the game, the game absolutely didn’t do justice to the long development period.

Starting from the visuals to the in-game mechanics, everything about that CD Projekt Red title was pretty poor. Forget about stunning graphics, basic attributes like bullet impact on water or sudden jumps from the moving cars looked blatant. The Phantom Liberty DLC tried to rebuild the game’s stature to a certain extent. Now, after the release of Patch 2.2, it seems the redemption arc of the game is now at full circle.

Patch 2.2 has changed the fate of Cybperpunk 2077 completely

The release of Cyberpunk 2077‘s Patch 2.2 on December 10, 2024, has generated a lot of buzz. This big update added new options for character customization, an improved Photo Mode, and various improvements to vehicles. It came as a surprise, especially since CD Projekt Red is supposed to be focused on developing The Witcher 4

That means this update might be the last one for Cyberpunk 2077. And truly, the game doesn’t need any updates anymore after Patch 2.2, as it has fixed all the persisting issues in the game. The main attraction of this update is the extensive level of detail and mind-blowing realism through basic mechanics and visuals. Not only that but there has also been a massive improvement in terms of performance.

Whenever we used to start playing a new game, one of the main highlights had always been the in-game water behavior. Despite being released 7 years earlier, GTA 5 had a lot better water mechanics than Cyberpunk 2077. In the latter, there was no impact effect of bullets or grenades in the water previously.

Also, you could land on your feet from a fast-moving vehicle instantly, without itching a skin. Even NPCs and other players were not bothered by vehicles, as you could flawlessly run the vehicles over them without any chaos. Thanks to Patch 2.2, everything has now changed and looks a lot more meaningful.

This redemption arc reminds us of No Man’s Sky

Before Cyberpunk 2077, there was No Man’s Sky, which normalized the “redemption arc” term in the gaming world. Since its release in 2016, the indie gem has grown to become one of the most anticipated games in the genre. However, with every new trailer, the unsettling truth that an endless universe ripe with an endless stream of planets was no longer possible set in stone.

It was never clear what we would do in the game itself, beyond the uncompromising scope, even after its release in 2016. Since even Hello Games later realized it wasn’t particularly interesting, the dull reality of hopping from planet to planet in search of resources to continue traveling to different systems was concealed until the very last minute.

However, Hello Games showed us that resilience is the key to success, and that is how No Man’s Sky finally succeeded. Since 2016, the game has received a total of 38 significant updates, and the last one might mark the end of this spree.

The game got the Worlds Part 1 update on July 17, 2024, which brought a complete visual overhaul to the game along with new flora and fauna. This update has taken the game to a whole new level and finally puts an end to the efforts by Hello Games to reach the pinnacle.
