Baldur's Gate 3's Shadowheart was originally more sarcastic, but was adjusted due to internal feedback

In Baldur's Gate 3, fan-favorite cleric Shadowheart was originally a more sarcastic character, but her personality was "tweaked" due to internal feedback.

Shadowheart's acerbic and fiery temper are some of her most defining characteristics, making her a popular romantic target in Baldur's Gate 3.

However, during the game's early access phase, her personality was very mean. According to GamesRadar+, during the "An Evening with Baldur's Gate 3" event held by BAFTA, producer Swen Vincke revealed key details about Shadowheart's early character development.

"We originally thought that Shadowheart's vitriol was great because our main goal was to create a team that didn't trust each other, and then have them gradually build trust." Vincke admitted that the writers went too far in making the other team members distrust Shadowheart, and he recalled another developer (most likely lead writer Sarah Baylus, who was only mentioned by name and could not be confirmed) saying, "I really don't like Shadowheart."

The host then asked if Shadow Heart's vitriol had been toned down, to which Vincke responded, "Yeah, it's been toned down a lot."

Baldur's Gate 3 was in Early Access for about three years, during which time Larian Studios made a lot of significant adjustments for the final version, many of which were based on player feedback. At one point in the panel discussion, Vincke recalled the strong opposition from players to certain elements during the Early Access phase.

"Players are telling us 'this is a mistake, you shouldn't be doing this, 100 people are saying it now, and there will be thousands of people saying it in the future. So fix it now.'"
