“A game is only late until it ships but a bad game is bad forever”: 1 Major Delay May Save Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 from Becoming the Next Cyberpunk 2077

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is at the cusp of its 9th September release date. 2024 has seen some big underdog stories with games like Helldivers 2, Palworld, and most recently, Black Myth: Wukong delivering above and beyond what fans expected.

The game has been in development for a while and it has been a slow and steady road. The game was originally scheduled for a 2023 release but got delayed in November of last year. In hindsight, the extra polish it got from getting delayed is worth much more than if it was released in a broken state.

The Next Warhammer 40K Adventure is Poised To Be A Banger

The decision to delay Space Marine 2s was not made lightly. In a recent interview with wccftech, Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive talked about how the team took that time to polish the game.

We just needed more time to polish it. You know that old saying a game is only late until it ships, but a bad game is bad forever.

The nine-month extension allowed the dev team to put extra work into the single-player campaign, the PvE co-op mode, and the multiplayer features. Willits pointed out that the additional time was crucial to ensuring that the game would meet the high expectations of Warhammer 40K fans.

He also mentioned in the game that “a bad game is forever.” And since the conversation was about delays and releases, you can’t help but draw a comparison to one specific title. Cyberpunk 2077.

The disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December 2020 is a bright reminder of the consequences of releasing a game before it’s ready. Despite years of anticipation, the game was plagued by bugs, performance issues, and missing features and cemented the launch as one of the worst, if not the worst we’ve seen.

All Signs Point Towards A Successful Release

Saber Interactive, on the other hand, has been receiving a lot of praise for almost every decision it makes. One of the main points of praise for Space Marine 2 is its commitment to quality over quantity, especially regarding player experience.

For example, Saber has taken a bold stance by choosing not to include Digital Rights Management (DRM) software, such as Denuvo, in the game. Saber also confirmed that all microtransactions within the game will be purely cosmetic, with no in-game cash shop or pay-to-win elements.

All in all, the game has been set up for success. The decision to delay the game was a calculated risk, but it appears to be paying off. By taking the time to polish the game and prioritize the player experience, Saber has made sure that there is nothing to worry about pre-release.

Whether the game is a hit or just another game release remains to be seen. The careful planning and execution Saber has shown could very well make it one of 2024’s standout titles.

What’s your opinion on Saber’s strategies for the game up until its release? Let us know in the comments!
