Fans of GTA 6 are disappointed after the widely held moon theory that forecasted the release date of the game’s eagerly anticipated second trailer was recently disproved. Even though there was some evidence to support this theory, it appears that Rockstar Games isn’t exactly using lunar phases to decide when to release the next trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Following the release of the first GTA 6 trailer almost a year ago, gamers have been frantically trying to figure out Rockstar’s next marketing strategy for the eagerly awaited open-world crime game. Although Rockstar hasn’t made any official announcements yet, that one fan theory did gain traction.
A large moon in its Waning Gibbous phase was featured in the background of a promotional image for Grand Theft Auto Online that Rockstar posted back in September 2023. The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 was released on December 1, 2023, which also happened to be the day the real moon entered this phase.
At the beginning of November 2024, Rockstar coincidentally released another GTA Online promotional image featuring a Waning Gibbous moon, which gave fans hope that the second trailer for GTA 6 would be revealed.
Fans speculated that Rockstar might reveal or release the second GTA 6 trailer on November 22, 2024, the day the lunar phase would conclude, because the moon was then in its Waning Gibbous phase.
But as of right now, it is well past 9 AM ET, when Rockstar and Take-Two typically make announcements, and there has been no word on the upcoming trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6. The GTA 6 fan base is understandably upset that its hopeful moon theory didn’t work out this time and is still unsure of Rockstar’s intentions for Trailer 2.
Although many fans may find the silence surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 frustrating, Rockstar and Take-Two have at least reiterated their belief in the game’s fall 2025 release window multiple times this year.
Given the strong belief, it appears highly probable that Rockstar will soon have another marketing beat planned for Grand Theft Auto 6. Fans shouldn’t give up hope for GTA 6‘s upcoming trailer, even though the moon theory turned out to be untrue.
On the stage of the Golden Joystick Awards 2024 where GTA 6 got the fan-voted Most Wanted Game award, an unknown Rockstar personnel has recently teased us about the game.
He promised us that “amazing things on Grand Theft Auto 6” are being done by an incredible amount of people. And all of these are “absolutely mind-blowing things.” At the end of his speech, he assured us that there’s “more to come.” However, it’s been almost a year, and we haven’t yet witnessed something “more” than the trailer.
Although the developers have been teasing the game ever since the last trailer was released over 354 days ago, little to no new information has been made public. These vague hints could cause the hype train to falter, at least momentarily.
Yes, it does take a long time to develop a game as big as Grand Theft Auto 6. The most popular game of the past ten years was most likely Grand Theft Auto 5.
Rockstar must therefore surpass himself in terms of originality and inventiveness in order to overcome that obstacle to success. Fans are prepared to wait for that. The hype string won’t last long, though, if you leave them all hanging with a few inconsequential hints of tease.
