Whenever a list ranking the best movies and TV shows is announced, there are bound to be some disagreements from fans, as a particular viewer’s reaction to any given medium is subjective. And similar is the case with Variety’s list of the greatest TV shows of all time, as their rankings for certain fan favorites, including Breaking Bad, sparked substantial fan outrage on the internet.
Although the Bryan Cranston-led show ended up breaking into the top five, another popular show from the same era didn’t even make it to the top ten, which further had fans riling up against the list.

While the Bryan Cranston-led show failed to garner much attention upon its debut despite being showered with love by critics, by the third season, it finally got the mainstream buzz. In recent years, Breaking Bad has once again risen to prominence after almost a decade since its ending, thanks to the meme culture and more importantly, the show’s quality. Considering it is one of the few shows that nailed its ending and knew when to finish even though they could’ve kept on going, there’s no doubt why many consider it the best the medium of television has to witness.
But in Variety’s list, Breaking Bad ranked 5, which, despite an impressive feat, has ruffled some fans’ feathers, as they claimed it certainly deserved the top spot instead of I Love Lucy, which ranked first. Furthermore, some fans felt offended that Game of Thrones didn’t even break into the top 10, which ranked 21 on the list.

Breaking Bad is the greatest show of all time, this isn’t even a debate.

Although it’s easy to see why some found the ranking bogus, it’s evident that the list is prioritizing the influence and impact of shows, so it’s understandable why I Love Lucy took the top spot.

I Love Lucy‘s Influence on the medium of television can’t be overstated. Arguably the most popular sitcom of all time, this isn’t the lone time the beloved comedy has scored the top rank. Back in 2012, in a survey conducted by ABC News and People Magazine, it was voted the best TV Show of all time. And it appears per Variety, it’s still pretty much the same case, which isn’t surprising as the iconic show revolutionized sitcoms and still holds up after 7 decades since its debut.
Even though Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and The Wire are some of the best-written works of fiction released for television, in terms of influence and impact, I Love Lucy is the clear winner.
