No 3 Highest Earning YouTuber Predicted Honey Was a “Scam” Years Ago While MrBeast Was Busy Promoting It

While the video posted by New Zealand content creator MegaLag might have exposed the Honey scam, previously promoted by MrBeast—he isn’t the only one who seemed busy investigating the popular browser extension owned by PayPal. Apparently, even the number 3 highest earning YouTuber, Mark Fischbach aka Markiplier, had previously exposed the scam. 

In a resurfaced video from 2019, YouTuber Markiplier can be seen expressing his doubts about Honey. But sadly, back then people didn’t seem to care about his opinions, which in recent few days have become insightful, especially after the browser extension faced allegations of “stealing money from content creators”. 

YouTuber Markiplier’s prediction about Honey goes viral 

Now that Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, Marques “MKBHD” Brownlee, and Linus Sebastian are currently facing controversies over their previous promotion of Honey, an old clip from 2019 of YouTuber Mark Fischbach went viral, where he appeared warning people about the popular browser extension. 

In the viral reaction clip, Mark Fischbach aka Markiplier can be seen asserting that he wasn’t convinced by Honey’s scheme. While popular YouTubers were promoting it and people were gobbling up the advantages of Honey, Markiplier had expressed his belief that there’s nothing for free online. 

I have a natural distrust of Honey… I don’t know what it is but my gut tells me that nothing in life is free so where are all these savings coming from? The money that people get from Honey, I just don’t trust it. 

They push so much advertising on YouTube, they do brand deals. They even offered me, and I said, ‘No.’ Because I just don’t trust Honey. I have a feeling that in like a couple of years there’s gonna be this great Honey conspiracy of 2022 and I don’t know what it is. 

Although people had previously ignored his warnings about Honey, the number 3 highest earning YouTuber (via Forbes), Markiplier, wasn’t wrong about his predictions. Indeed, years after his 2019 video, Honey turned into a controversy after YouTuber MegaLag explained how the browser extension’s affiliate system reportedly worked. 

MrBeast caught up in fiasco over Honey controversy 

Recently, the New Zealand content creator MegaLag revealed that when a YouTuber promotes an affiliate link to Honey, they are supposed to earn a commission if users purchase products using that link. But in reality, when users actually apply Honey’s discount codes, the affiliate cookie on the page is replaced with one that credits Honey instead, leading the creator to lose out on the commission. 

This whole explanation video from MegaLag thus sparked controversies surrounding Honey and how the browser extension cheated content creators of their deserving commission. Furthermore, the whole chaos led Youtubers like MrBeast, LinusTechTips, MKBHD, and more—who once promoted Honey—to meet people’s wrath, now that Honey is accused of ripping off influencers. 

Although MrBeast and the other above-mentioned YouTubers have refrained from making any comments, MegaLag’s video has turned things upside down. Even Markiplier’s old video is now making rounds on the internet earning people’s praise for being one of the initial few creators to express doubts over the scam.
