Diablo 4 - Leveling Guide
This leveling guide presents the fastest ways to level up and farm EXP in Diablo 4 (D4) Season 4. Learn about the best methods, tips, and strategies to speed up your leveling from 1-50, and into World Tier 3 and 4 during the Season of Loot Reborn!

Season 4 Leveling Guide (Level 1-50)

How to Level Up from 1 to 50

1. Complete Chapter 1 of Season Journey

Right off the bat, look to complete the first chapter of the Season Journey as the objectives are pretty simple. These can be completed by simply participating in the Helltide.

You will be rewarded with Greater Favor for the Battle Pass, as well as some Aspects that are useful for early game. Depending on your chosen leveling build, these aspects can be game-changing once available.

How to Complete Season 4 Journey

2. Play on World Tier 2 Instead of World Tier 1

It's now worth playing on World Tier 2 in Season 4 due to the XP boost update in the season. World Tier 2 now offers +50% more XP, ultimately making your leveling journey faster.

How to Change World Tier Difficulty

3. Prioritize the Helltide

Diablo 4 - Helltide Threat

The Helltide should be your only go-to activity for leveling due to its increased mob density and rework. The Helltide now has a threat-level system where waves of enemies will directly spawn in your location.

Additionally, participating in the Helltide can grant you Legendary Items, Murmuring Obols, and other crafting resources for upgrading gear and healing potion!

Note: Healing Potion now only use Bundled Herbs instead of specific materials, making it easier to upgrade.

4. Clear Out All Strongholds

As soon as you hit at least Level 20, you can start clearing out the Strongholds found throughout the map to gain a hefty amount of XP. Once you start hitting the range of level 30-40, make sure to prioritize strongholds since clearing them will allow you to participate in the Gathering Legions event tied to the location.

5. Complete Your Class Specialization Quest

Once you hit Level 15 (or Level 25 if you're a Necromancer), make sure to complete your Class Specialization Quest to unlock additional buffs that make leveling easier. Don't put this off since Blood Harvest will start ramping up in difficulty once you hit Level 20+ if you don't have a semi-cohesive build.

6. Use the Urn of Aggression Season Blessing

Diablo 4 - Season Blessings

Season Blessings are unlocked on reaching Level 8 and can be bought when you have your first Smoldering Ashes, which are obtained by progressing the Battle Pass and reaching certain level thresholds.

The first level of the Urn of Aggression buff will boost your XP from monster kills by 5%, so be sure to equip it as soon as you hit 28 to maximize your results.
That said, although respeccing Blessings starts out very cheap, note that the cost of respeccing will triple each time you change it, so don't swap it out unless you plan on keeping it on a different Blessing for a while.

7. Complete Whispers for the Tree of Whispers

Tree of Whispers

Since you'll probably be completing the Whispers inside Helltide, make sure to keep track of your total Grim Favors. Once you hit the max cap, teleport over to the Tree of Whispers and turn them in to get a reward cache as well as a ton of XP for your effort.

How to Complete the Tree of Whispers

8. Keep Track of Upcoming World Bosses

Once you hit Level 35, start paying attention to World Boss spawns. In Season 2, they now spawn every 3.5 hours instead of every 6. Make sure to keep track of when they spawn and pay attention to the 1 hour warning in-game so you can plan your leveling loop accordingly.

Do note that World Boss difficulty has been increased as of Patch 1.2.0. If there aren't at least a handful of 30+ players in your world boss instance, then it would probably be better to skip it in favor of continuing the leveling process inside the Blood Harvest area.

Additionally, it will not be worth it to complete World Bosses pre-35 since the XP gains are pretty bad and the loot will be locked behind a Level 35 requirement.

World Boss Timer, Schedule, and Locations

9. Complete the Capstone Dungeon at Level 40-48

Diablo 4 - Cathedral of Light Map Location

Once you hit Level 40 to 48, complete the Capstone Dungeon to unlock World Tier 3 (WT3) for your seasonal character.

More experienced players can try their hand at completing the capstone dungeon as soon as they hit Level 40, while newer players can probably wait until they hit Level 48 and have a gear set and build ready for the challenge.

Players who find themselves stuck trying to complete it pre-48 can try joining a group or asking for a carry in the XGamer discord powerleveling channel.

10. Complete the Season 4 Storyline Before WT3

World Tier 3 will mean you'll need to start thinking about your endgame build as you unlock Paragon Points. Before you reach this point in the season, make sure to complete the Season Storyline first to take since it give crafting materials for your endgame journey.

How to Level Up from 1 to 50

1. Prioritize Helltides and Blood Maiden Event

Diablo 4 - Defeating the Blood Maiden

As you enter World Tier 3, the Helltide should still be your priority, as it rewards you with numerous items thaty are useful for your journey to World Tier 4.

The best activity during the Helltide is the Accursed Ritual event, which spawn waves of enemies and the Blood Maiden. Pair this event with the Profane Mindcage which raises the enemy level by 10, and you're all set for leveling.

Additionally, farming the Helltide at level 50 will reward you with Glyphs for your Paragon Board.

How to Beat Blood Maiden

2. Start Running Sacred Nightmare Dungeons

Although running Sacred Nightmare Dungeons in WT3 is hardly worth its time, it's best to do this activity when the Helltide is not active; this allows you to gain Glyph Experience to upgrade your Glyphs.

3. Complete the Second Capstone Dungeon at Level 60-74

Once you hit Level 60 to 74, complete the Capstone Dungeon to unlock World Tier 4 (WT4) for your seasonal character.

More experienced players can try their hand at completing the capstone dungeon as soon as they hit Level 60, while newer players can probably wait until they hit Level 74 and have a gear set and build ready for the challenge.

Players who find themselves stuck trying to complete it pre-73 can try joining a group or asking for a carry in the XGamer discord powerleveling channel.

4. Temper Affixes into Gear

Tempering Items

World Tier 3 is great point to start tempering affixes to your gear as these define your build and make leveling much easier. Tempering can be unlocked at the start of the game and only costs crafting materials (no gold).

Tempering gear requires Tempering Manuals that you can find as loot drops from enemies. The best way to farm Tempering Manuals is by participating in Helltides.

How to Farm Tempering Manuals

Claim Wolf's Honor Rewards for Gear

On the topic of gear, it's best to unlock your rewards from the Wolf's Honor immediately as they will not scale with your current level or world tier. Put these items to good use once you unlock them.

1. Prioritize Ancestral Nightmare Dungeons

Progress your Season Journey

On the topic of builds, keep track of your Season Journey progress as these can reward equipment and legendary aspects. Aside from build related rewards, it also gives you various resource rewards for upgrading your healing potion and crafting elixirs.

2. Participate in Helltides

Helltides will still be a part of your routine as this is the best activity for getting legendary aspects and gold. The Blood Maiden is should still be the priority activity paired with the Profane Mindcage for leveling efficiency.

3. Farm Uber Bosses

4. Run the Pit of Artificers

The Pit is a pinnacle activity that has enemies with level 100 and above. You're bound to do this activity as it has the materials for Masterworking (upgrading) your Items's affixes.

The Pit can be unlocked by clearing a Tier 46 or above nightmare dungeon. Dungeons in these tiers will grant you Rune Shards that are used to enter The Pit.

Follow Main Story Quests

Diablo 4 - Follow Main Story Quests

Do Side Quests and Cellars Along the Way

Diablo 4 - Do Side Quests and Cellars Along the Way

Most Side Quests and Cellars are quick sources of EXP and can be found en route to main quest objectives.

However, do not go out of your way to complete them as they are still useful later on because of the scaling EXP rewards.

Alts Only: Power Level to 50

For players who have already completed the Main Story and are using an alt character, it's possible to get powerleveled by other players with the following steps. Before Patch 1.1, this could be used to reach Level 50 in a matter of minutes, but unfortunately it has been heavily nerfed with the release of Seasons so results may vary.

  • Have a high-level party carry you through the Nightmare and Torment Capstone Dungeons
  • Follow the high-level party into a high-level Nightmare Dungeon and wait at the entrance
  • Try not to die and soak up the sweet XP

Run and Reset High Mob Density Nightmare Dungeons

Nightmare Dungeons are preferred over regular Dungeons because monster levels will eventually trail behind player levels (up to 5 levels behind) in World Tiers III and IV.

Below are some Nightmare Dungeons with high mob density for farming EXP. Classes that excel in Area of Effect (AoE) damage like the Sorcerer and Necromancer should be able to breeze through these Nightmare Dungeons. Remember to use your Elixirs like the Precision Elixir and Assault Elixir to boost DPS and increase EXP gains!

It is recommended to defeat higher level monsters as you will receive a bonus XP boost up to a maximum of 10 levels, provided you can farm Nightmare Dungeons efficiently. This stacks in addition to the increase of base XP from the higher level monster, which also caps out at 10 levels.

Instantly Reset the Dungeon

Diablo 4 - Instantly Reset the Dungeon

After clearing a Dungeon, you can use different methods of resetting it, depending if you are playing solo or in a party.

If you are solo and are waiting for the 60 and 150-second timers to reset a Dungeon, you can sell or salvage gear or craft Elixirs at the Alchemist during this downtime.

How to Reset Dungeons

Hunt Elite Mobs in Fields of Hatred

Diablo 4 - Hunt Elite Mobs in Fields of Hatred

If you are tired of running dungeons over and over, you can try hunting for Elite mobs in Fields of Hatred. These areas also have high Elite and mob density to quickly gain EXP. Just make sure that you are not disturbed by other players who are out for blood. Otherwise, it is better to go back to the Dungeons.

Do Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers

Diablo 4 - Do Grim Favors for the Tree of Whispers

After the campaign, the Tree of Whispers becomes available. Accumulating enough Grim Favors through various activities will reward you with caches that give scaling EXP, on top of the EXP that you get from said activities.

Use Bonus EXP Elixirs

Diablo 4 - Use Bonus EXP Elixirs

Some Elixirs grant bonus EXP gain on top of some other beneficial Status Effects. Use them when you are going for a long session of grinding to maximize your EXP gains! Do not worry about running out of Elixirs because you can craft them by speaking with an Alchemist.

Party Up with Other Players

Diablo 4 - Party Up with Other Players

Party up with friends or other players to gain a buff that increases EXP gained.

If you are not in a party, you can still take advantage of this buff in open world activities like World Bosses and Helltide Events by asking to join other players or sending party invites.

Do Remaining Side Quests

Diablo 4 - Do Remaining Side Quests

If you have been focusing on the campaign, you will surely have some Side Quests left. Even in the endgame, it is worth doing when these are nearby because they give scaling EXP.

Unlock Your Mount Before Exploring

Diablo 4 - Unlock Your Mount Before Exploring

The world of Sanctuary is vast and it will take some time to travel between objectives on foot. Try to unlock your mount in Act 4 before exploring to save some time and sanity.

Ignore Loot in Dungeons If You're Geared Out

Diablo 4 - Ignore Loot in Dungeons If You

Once your gear is mostly sorted out, you can simply ignore loot that drop to finish Dungeons faster. Legendary and Unique items will automatically be sent to your Stash, so do not worry about missing important equipment.

If you are planning on running multiple Dungeons, this can shave off precious seconds that eventually add up. You can get a more significant boost in power from Paragon unlocks and higher item power drops, than checking every item on the floor.

Stay Near Campfires

Diablo 4 - Use Campfire to Gain XP
Staying near Campfires provides a temporary stacking buff that increases experience gain from monster kills, making them worthwhile to find and use while leveling. The earliest Campfire players can find is at the Kor Dragan Stronghold in Fractured Peaks.

How to Beat Kor Dragan Stronghold

Use a Leveling Build

Figuring out your own build can be fun in the early stages of the game, and we encourage you to experiment with all the different skills available to your class! But, in order to clear the story efficiently, it's best to use an effective build.

The Leveling Builds below have full setups for each Class, as well as tips on how to level up and advance quickly with that specific Class.

Leveling Builds for Each Class

Clear Mobs Efficiently

While it doesn't directly increase your EXP gain, learning how to kite, group, and clear mobs efficiently means you get to complete quests and get through the game much faster. Take advantage of narrow corridors, crowd control skills, and area of effect abilities to quickly clear out groups of foes and speed up your progression.

Increase Your World Tier

While we recommend starting on Adventurer difficulty, consider increasing your World Tier to Veteran once you've obtained a decent amount of Rare gear and skill points. The Veteran World Tier provides 20% additional EXP gain, which is essential for leveling up quickly while progressing through the game.

In addition, we suggest increasing World Tier to Nightmare and onwards after beating the main story to further boost your experience gain on the way to level 100.

Things Not to Do for EXP Farming

Things to Avoid When EXP Farming

Do Not Chase Renown Milestones for EXP

Diablo 4 - Do Not Focus on Renown Bonuses When Farming EXP

If you are solely focused on farming EXP, it is not worth going after the Renown Milestones that grant bonus EXP. The EXP reward does not scale with higher levels, and are mostly for early game.

Renown System Guide

Avoid Fixating on Gear Early On

Diablo 4 - Do Not Fixate on Gear Early On

As you are playing through the game early on, you will be constantly switching through equipment. You are free to inspect them for the affixes, but do not spend too much time deciding between two pieces of equipment. If you see green arrows on your damage stat, do not hesitate to equip it.

How to Upgrade Equipment

Refrain From Fighting Enemies Way Above Your Level

Diablo 4 - Refrain From Fighting Enemies Way Above Your Level

It is better to defeat multiple Elites that are around your level around the map, than spending minutes in one spot trying to take down one extremely tough monster, especially those that are at least 11 levels higher than you.

The 10 level offset in World Tier IV and 6 level offset in World Tier III will not allow you to get the full EXP from monsters, but you will still get an EXP boost because of the level difference. For example, fighting a level 100 monster at level 1 in World Tier IV will give you the base EXP of a level 10 monster, plus a 15% EXP boost.
