Baldur's Gate 3's Scleritas Fel Proves The Dark Urge is Basically a Completely Different Game

Highlights

  • The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3 is a fully customizable Origin character with a non-changeable background as the Haunted One.
  • Sceleritas Fel is a manifestation of the Dark Urge's drive to kill and can either become an ally or a barrier depending on player choices.
  • The Dark Urge is ultimately revealed to be the disgraced Chosen of Bhaal and has a personal rivalry with their sister, Orin, in a duel in the Temple of Bhaal.

Warning: This article has end-game spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3. The Dark Urge is one of the six pre-made Origin characters available to players in Baldur's Gate 3. It stands out as being the only fully customizable one, with the Origin's appearance, name, class, race, and sub-race being up to the player. Only the character's background, the Haunted One, is unable to be changed and proves to be an important part during the events of Baldur's Gate 3, especially when the enigmatic butler Sceleritas Fel shows up at key points in the Dark Urge's story.

Sceleritas Fel is something of a physical manifestation of the Dark Urge's drive to kill. He's the worst part of them, tempting them with secrets from their past, their true identity, and insight and understanding into how they feel when no one else in the party truly understands. Depending on the player's decisions and how they roleplay the Dark Urge's story, Sceleritas Fel can become a loyal ally or another barrier to overcome.

Level 12 is a low cap for a game that spans dozens of hours, but Larian Studios has good reasons for implementing it in Baldur's Gate 3.

The Dark Urge's History

The Appearance of Sceleritas Fel

Sceleritas Fel appears shortly after the Dark Urge murders Alfira the tiefling bard, and introduces himself as the Urge's butler. This establishes their relationship, and won't be the last time Sceleritas will show up in camp. He tells the Urge that they'll be rewarded for murdering innocents and those they love. Sceleritas Fel appears again in Act 2 at a critical moment before meeting the Selune cleric, Isobel, at the Last Light Inn, and tells the Urge to murder her.

Murdering Isobel has devastating consequences, including the doom of everyone sheltering inside Last Light Inn. Unfortunately, choosing not to kill Isobel also has consequences for the Dark Urge, as Sceleritas Fel visits once again and informs them that their Urge has to be satisfied somehow, and now it'll be directed at the person they love most. This results in a tense cutscene between the Dark Urge, Sceleritas Fel, and the player character's chosen love interest, where the player can choose for the Dark Urge to indulge in or resist the Urge to kill the chosen companion.

The Impact of the Dark Urge's Return to Baldur's Gate

The Truth Behind the Dark Urge

The Dark Urge is ultimately revealed to be the disgraced Chosen of Bhaal and a Bhaalspawn, the most pure of the Bhaalspawn. Orin is the Dark Urge's sister and the current Chosen of Bhaal, and betrayed them before the events of Baldur's Gate 3. The Dark Urge's arrival in Baldur's Gate and investigation into the Bhaal cult is all the more urgent and personal as the cult's former leader, as the quest is now incredibly personal and so much more dangerous, with Orin viewing the Dark Urge as a personal threat to her power.

The Dark Urge's Duel with Orin

The showdown between Orin and the Dark Urge in the Temple of Bhaal is a duel between two disgraced Bhaalspawn: one who was betrayed and brought down, the other neither talented nor favored. It makes Act 3 of Baldur's Gate 3 far more personal than with a Tav playthrough, with many additional dialogue options and opportunities for roleplaying even beyond conversations with Orin and the Bhaalists.
