The Diplomat background can be a good starting point for a pacifist build thanks to encouraging Persuasion to talk your way out of situations. You can use your charisma in other ways, such as making credits with Commerce, spending credits with Negotiation, or becoming closer to your companions through Leadership.
Diplomats can also appreciate the other Social Skills that can affect NPCs to avoid fights. Diplomacy makes sense as it lets NPCs stop fighting, while Intimidation can make them run away. If your words can't convince an NPC, you can learn Instigation to have NPCs attack each other instead. However, it's important to note that this skill can still lead to indirect enemy casualties, which can ruin your pacifist build. Alternatively, you can learn Manipulation to force NPCs below your level to obey your command for a short time and defuse the situation.
In the worst-case scenario, you may need to defend yourself if negotiations fail. Thankfully, Diplomats already have Wellness to help with surviving more attacks. Dueling can be learned for self-defense if you must pull out a weapon to stop enemies.
Weapon | Type | Damage | Ammo Type |
---|---|---|---|
Magshot | Pistol | Phys | .43 MI |
Tanto | Melee Weapon | Phys | N/A |
Just in case up-front negotiations turn sideways, a diplomat must have a Tanto for a melee weapon at the ready. And just in case a knife isn't enough to close a deal, a Magshot pistol should seal it.
Best Weapons: Weapon Tier List
Since Diplomats usually try to avoid gunfights, some basic protection with light armor should help keep your total carrying weight low.
Dream Home |
You own a luxurious, customizable house on a peaceful planet! Unfortunately it comes with a 125,000 credit mortgage with GalBank that has to be paid weekly. |
---|---|
Empath |
You are deeply connected to the feelings of others. Performing actions your companion likes will result in a temporary increase in combat effectiveness. But. performing actions they don't like will have the precise opposite effect. |
Extrovert |
You're a people person. Exerting yourself uses less oxygen when adventuring with human companions. but more when adventuring alone. (Can't be combined with Introvert.) |
Diplomats have a knack for Commerce, so paying off the mortgage of the Dream Home should be possible without resorting to thievery. Diplomats with Leadership can also benefit from both the Empath and Extrovert traits if you bring along companions to assist you in your exploration.
