The Grand Theft Auto series is perhaps one of the most well-known if not the most well-known video game franchises in the world. And GTA 6 is probably the most anticipated game in the history of the industry. So it’s not a surprise that expectations are high for it to deliver.
It’s been more than a decade since GTA 5 came out, and fans have had all the time in the world to think of what they want in GTA 6, and what they don’t want. And one of the most annoying things that shouldn’t return are the blasted phone calls that start missions.
One of the biggest complaints from fans is how these sudden mission-triggering phone calls interrupt gameplay. Whether in GTA IV or GTA V, players often found themselves pulled into missions at inconvenient times.
If there’s one thing that should NOT be in GTA 6, it’s phone calls that auto start missions.

A Reddit user recently vented about this saying, “You’re just doing your thing… and then BAM, you have to do a mission because you didn’t know the call would start it.”. They recalled moments when they were about to save their progress or log off, only to be dragged into a mission.
A common suggestion among fans is to make mission phone calls optional. For instance, players could choose whether to respond immediately or delay the mission until they were ready.

Games like Cyberpunk 2077 already use a similar system, giving players the freedom to respond to calls on their terms. Rockstar could benefit from incorporating a similar system in GTA 6. Giving players the freedom to decide when to engage with the story is a good step for respecting players’ playstyles.

The repetitive nature of mission-related calls has also been criticized, particularly in GTA Online. Players get multiple calls within minutes from characters like Lester, Agatha, or English Dave to give them a new mission. For many, these constant interruptions feel more like spam than a meaningful part of the experience.
Immersion is undoubtedly a critical aspect of the Grand Theft Auto series, and some players argue that random mission calls contribute to the realism of its world. For instance, receiving an urgent call to rescue a kidnapped character could add to the immersion since it’s very possible in the GTA world.

But even those who appreciate this immersive element acknowledge the need for balance. One fan argued that while such calls should remain part of the game, they should be configurable, allowing players to toggle them on or off based on personal preference.
The hype for GTA 6 is immense, and Rockstar Games knows this. The game won the Most Wanted Game award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2024 and has also been also nominated for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2024. After accepting the Golden Joystick Award, a Rockstar rep said:
There’s an incredible amount of people doing amazing things on Grand Theft Auto 6. Absolutely mind-blowing things.
With the game set to release in 2025 and promises of the most detailed open world in the franchise’s history, GTA 6 has the potential to redefine how players engage with missions in open-world games.
Returning to Vice City, the game aims to deliver a fresh yet nostalgic experience. And we can’t wait. What do you want to see in GTA 6? Let us know in the comments!
