Elden Ring's map can be brought up with View / Touchpad, or Select on some controllers. However, areas will be grayed out until you collect each region's respective map fragments.
Note that opening the map is unavailable when in battle, when discovered by an enemy, when inside a dungeon, or during other special circumstances. Time passes in-game while you're using the map so you are open to enemy attacks.
Fast traveling is possible using the map. You can only travel in between checkpoints called Sites of Grace, which you can discover out in the open world and inside dungeons.
While the map is open, press A / X to place down beacons. These beacons appear in the world as blue pillars of light that easy guide you to your custom destinations. You can place down up to 5 beacons at a time and each beacon will disappear if you walk into them.
Furthermore, custom markers can be placed on the map. There are 10 different marker styles you can use to mark the locations of anything you find interesting, like NPCs, locations, unreachable treasures, and difficult enemies. You can place down up to 100 of these markers.
