List of Contents
Upon dying, you will automatically be sent to the nearest Keeper's Shrine that you've visited beforehand. Take note that the game may autosave once you respawn.
How to Save: Can You Turn Off Autosave?
There appears to be no penalties to dying in this game. You get to keep any items, Will, experience, Sparks, and spells you may have obtained before you died.
The only penalty is having to walk all the way back to the enemy that bested you if you want to keep fighting it.
How to Respec Abilities and Spells
Although dying isn't too bad in this game, you probably don't want to die over and over again if you can help it. Once you notice your health getting low, you can heal by drinking from your Gourd.
You can do this by pressing L1 on a PS5 controller and the R key on PC.

Whenever you find a Shrine, it's a good idea to offer incense and rest there to replenish your health, remove any negative status effects, replenish your Mana, fill your Qi, and refill your Gourd. You can't run out of incense, so don't worry about using Shrines too much.
