You have access to 3 stances, which are Smash, Pillar, and Thrust, which differ on how your Heavy Attack is executed. The Smash Stance is what you'll first use by default, but you can unlock Pillar Stance at level 5 and Thrust Stance at level 20.
You can switch between these stances easily, once they've been unlocked.
A common trend for Action RPGs is that each attack the player executes will have different reactions for each enemy which can stagger them on top of dealing damage. You can deal Light Attacks and deal multiple chainable attacks or Heavy Attacks to stagger them.
You can change your form and use your knowlege and experiences to exploit your enemies' weakness. There are two different ways you can transform—by using a more long-term Transformation Spell or by using a Spirit for one quick attack.
If you dodge right as the enemy is about to hit you, you'll execut a Perfect Dodge. This increases your Focus meter, which is used when executing Heavy Attacks.
Stop the enemies' attacks by using Immobilize skill. This is a spell you obtain early on in Chapter 1, and can prove to be very useful throughout your whole playthrough. You can use it defensively to stop an onslaught of attacks or offensively to hit them where it hurts most!
If simple dodging isn't enough to get you out of a boss's combo, you can use Cloud Step to dodge enemy attacks and use this chance to punish enemies back! Once you upgrade this skill, you can even gain buffs by doing so.
Skills like magic and transformations can be equipped in your skill slots and used during combat. When a skill is ready to use, it appears in black and white, while skills that are on cooldown are highlighted in red.
