In ancient times, there was a Taoist temple at the foot of Purple Cloud Mountain. One day, a devout Taoist nun sought shelter there, weary from her travels. The temple's nuns, empathizing with her, prepared hot water for her to bathe and change.

While she was washing, the nun heard a noise from the beam above. Without making a sound, she dressed and lightly flicked her dust brush, which caught a monster from the beam.

Hearing the commotion, the other nuns rushed in and saw a green-scaled snake demon on the floor

The snake demon, caught but unpanicked, seemed accustomed to spying, as the nuns had previously suffered from his mischief. They scolded him, but he, with a look of disdain, puffed his cheeks and spat out a green, viscous poison that splattered around. Anyone it touched immediately fell to the ground in agony.

Seeing the demon's unrepentant behavior, the Taoist nun prepared to eliminate him with a flickering golden needle. Fearing for his life, the snake demon quickly pleaded for mercy, claiming he was a minor demon who concocted medicines in the mountains. He suggested that an antidote was in his medicine basket outside. Given his earnest plea, the nun gave him a chance. He rummaged through his basket and handed her a white pill for inspection, saying, "This is a Tree Pearl, made from the leaves of the pearl tree, rare in the human world and capable of curing all poisons." He fed a pearl to each of the nuns, and they recovered instantly.

From then on, for reasons unknown, the temple always kept Tree Pearls in stock. Many poisoned individuals sought help there, but since a single Tree Pearl was extremely expensive, most could not afford it and were left to face their fate.
