What is Difficulty Class

Baldur

Difficulty Class is the number that you must meet or exceed during a roll in order to succeed in ability checks in Baldur's Gate 3. Learn more about Difficulty Class and how it works!

What is Difficulty Class

Score to Beat to Pass Ability Checks

Difficulty Class (DC) is the numerical score that you'll need to reach while making a roll in order to pass Ability Checks and overcome the challenge given to you. The game determines which of the seven abilities will be used based on the situation of the task.

Not reaching the required DC score after rolling results in failure, and the character either makes no progress towards the objective or succumbs to the negative effects of the task at hand.

Difficulty Class Calculation

The value of the Difficulty Class is determined based on how challenging the task is during an ability check. The harder a task is, the higher its DC.

Difficulty DC
Very Easy 5
Easy 10
Medium 15
Hard 20

Ability Score Provides Bonuses and Penalties

Baldur

Bonuses will be applied to the roll if a character has a high ability score for the ability required in the check.

Likewise, if a character isn't proficient enough in an ability, penalties will be imposed and the number received in the result of the d20 roll will be further deducted based on how low the ability score is for that character.

Certain Scrolls and Spells Increase Success Rate

Certain Scrolls and Spells are also bonus modifiers to the roll, and you can choose to apply them to increase your chances of surpassing the Difficulty Class value.

Inspirations Can Be Used to Reroll

Inspiration points can be spent to reroll an Ability Check. This is particularly useful whenever you fail to reach the Difficulty Class on your first roll attempt.

Characters gain Inspiration when they complete Background Goals and the maximum points you can have is 4, anything earned over that cap becomes Experience points instead.

Affects Success of Saving Throws

Baldur

Saving Throws occur when you cast out spells or do attack rolls that impose status ailments to an enemy.

The receiver of the attack must roll against your Difficulty Class and if the result of the roll is equal to or higher than the DC, then the target resists and negates the side effects of the attack.
