Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders

Baldur

Since Act 3 starts in Rivington, chances are you've already run into this side quest while visiting the Open Hand Temple next to the Circus of the Last Days. To begin investigating Orin's Bhaalist cult in Baldur's Gate, help Sister Yannis solve the mystery behind Father Lorgan's murder at the temple.

The easiest way to complete this side quest is to speak to the dead suspects directly. Use Speak with Dead on the corpse of Brilgor (buried at the Temple's graveyard) and the Shapechanger named Zomm (found in the tunnels beneath the temple) to progress easily.

Once you complete Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders, you will be given a Lower City Pass that allows you to enter Baldur's Gate. Speak to the Flaming Fist guarding the drawbridge into Wyrm's Rock Fortress and present the pass to unlock the way into the city.

Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders

Listen to Gortash's Bargain (Optional)

Baldurs Gate 3 - Gortashs Deal

While making your way through Wyrm's Rock Fortress, you will be stopped by one of the Steel Watchers guarding the area. Gortash will take over and tell you that you are invited to his ordination ceremony in the Audience Chamber above.

Despite being optional, attending does have Gortash broker a deal with you, allowing you to team up with him and confront the Elder Brain after you've dealt with Orin. In the process of gaining your trust, Gortash will let slip that one of your camp followers is an impostor and is in fact a Shapechanger planted by Orin.

Who is the Shapechanger in Your Camp?

There is no definite way to tell which of your camp followers is an impostor without Orin confronting you directly about it. While suspicion may lie with Yenna, do note that one of the unique confrontation scenarios in camp will involve Orin shapechanging into one of your companions and pretending to accuse Yenna of being the traitor.

Yenna Guide: Should You Invite Her to Camp?

Will Orin Kill Your Companion if You Confront Her First?

Baldurs Gate 3 - Orin Charisma Check

No, Orin will not kill your abducted companion immediately. If you decide to go after her first instead of Gortash, rest easy because you will still be able to prevent her from killing your companion by passing Skill Checks during the opening dialogue sequence at the Temple of Bhaal.

Do note that there is no timer for rescuing Orin's victim inside the Temple of Bhaal. You can play through the many quests of Act 3 without having to worry about Orin killing your captured companion prematurely.

How to Rescue Orin's Victim

Investigate the Murders in Baldur's Gate

Baldurs Gate 3 - Dolor Disguised as Meztli

Upon arriving at the Lower City of Baldur's Gate, your first order of business will be to Investigate the Murders listed on the Bloodstained Parchment. Visit the potential murder victims in the city and warn them of the Bhaalist plot in order to progress the side quest.

Note: Technically, you don't really need to speak to Flaming Fist investigating the murders. You can safely skip this interaction as you only really need to save Cora Highberry at the Wine Festival, and Figaro Pennygood at the Facemaker's Boutique to complete the quest.

Investigate the Murders

Use Counterspell to Prevent Dolor From Escaping

The earliest you can confront Dolor is at the Wine Festival inside Baldur's Gate. Speak to Cora Highberry and tell her that a killer is after her to trigger the fight against the assassin. If you manage to consistently use Counterspell to negate Dolor's Dimension Door casts, you can kill him and get both the Hand Bag and the Torn and Bloody Page early.

Kill Gortash First (Optional)

Baldurs Gate 3 - Killing Enver Gortash

If you do decide that you want to kill Gortash first, then brace yourself for a series of side quests related to the Steel Watch and the Iron Throne. However, given that we've already stopped Dolor and his killing spree, you're relatively free to pursue this part of the quest at your own pace.

To kill Gortash, you will first need to disable his Steel Watch. You can do this by completing either the Save the Gondians or Avenge the Ironhand Gnomes questlines. Once the mechanical warriors are disabled, kill Gortash at Wyrm's Rock Fortress and cut off his hand to present to the Murder Tribunal.

Go to Candulhallow Tombstones

Once you have either the Hand Bag or Gortash's Hand (or both), start making your way to Candulhallow Tombstones. It will be an unmarked building tucked against the city wall, northeast of the Elfsong Tavern.

Use the Tombstone Shop Key to get through the front door and find the secret Cellar Door that will take you to the Murder Tribunal of the Bhaalist cult.

Find the Secret Button Behind the Butterfly On Skull Painting

In order to reveal the secret Cellar Door behind the bookshelf, you will first need to find the hidden button that moves the shelf. Pick up the painting titled Butterfly On Skull and press the button it was covering to reveal the Cellar Door.

How to Get the Cellar Door Password to the Murder Tribunal

In order to obtain the Sicarius password that allows you to reach the Murder Tribunal, players will need to read the Torn and Bloody Page quest item that they get from Dolor's body.

The note can be obtained by killing Dolor and looting it from his body, or by pickpocketing it off of him (DC11, Sleight of Hand) when you see him at the Wine Festival next to Cora Highberry.

Appear Before the Murder Tribunal

Baldurs Gate 3 - Impress Sarevok and the Murder Tribunal

Before you can find the Temple of Bhaal underneath Baldur's Gate, you will first need to secure the Bhaal Amulet. Appear before the Murder Tribunal and submit to be judged in order to become an Assassin of Bhaal and receive the amulet. Alternatively, you can also murder the tribunal to get the amulet that way.

Do You Need to Kill Gortash to Become an Assassin of Bhaal?

Baldurs Gate 3 - Spirit of Father Lorgan

The short answer is no. The spirit that gets summoned during the Murder Tribunal trial will always be based on the hand you have in your possession. For example, if you sent all of the other hands in the Hand Bag back to camp except Father Lorgan's, it will be Father Lorgan who appears during the trial.

Additionally, the three DC20 Deception Check options will only appear if you did not personally kill the murder target. By killing Gortash first, you will make it easier to pass the Murder Tribunal's trial. Just make sure you avoid the details don't matter and died in combat honorably options since these will trigger combat.

Should You Kill Sarevok or Become an Assassin of Bhaal?

Becoming an Assassin will unlock a new Merchant in the Murder Tribunal that sells Bhaalist gear. The trade-off is that you have to kill Inspector Valeria and be baptized by Bhaal to become an Assassin. Additionally, if you did not kill Gortash, you will need to pass difficult Ability Checks to even become an assassin.

On the other hand, killing Sarevok will reward you with the Sword of Chaos and Sarevok's Horned Helmet, on top of the Bhaal Amulet you need to enter the Temple of Bhaal in the Undercity. Just be prepared to pass a Charisma Check when meeting Orin since killing Sarevok will have her attempt to kill your captured friend (even if you killed Gortash beforehand).

Find the Temple of Bhaal in the Undercity

With the Bhaal Amulet safely in your possession, all that's left to do is to find the entrance to the Temple of Bhaal. Explore the sewers of Baldur's Gate until you find the Undercity Ruins Waypoint. The entrance should be right beside it. Present the Bhaal Amulet when interacting with the door to unlock the way forward.

Skip the Ambush by Using Invisibility and Discovering the Waypoint

When you first start making your way deeper into the Temple of Bhaal from the Undercity Waypoint, you will be walking into an ambush. Given how tricky it is to snipe Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev, it will be much easier to simply use Invisibility and book it to the metal door that leads you to the Temple of Bhaal Waypoint.

While the fight is doable, do note that the loot you get from it will not be worth it. Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev will not be holding any special items and the remaining assassin ambushers will all vanish as soon as you kill the primary target.

Kill Orin and Get Her Netherstone

Baldurs Gate 3 - Confronting Orin in Slayer Form

From the Temple of Bhaal Waypoint, head north and present the Bhaal Amulet to the door of the temple. Once the door opens, head inside and confront Orin at the central platform. Again, if you killed Sarevok or spared Gortash you will need to convince Orin not to kill your captured party member before the fight.

Once your companion is safe, all that's left to do is to kill Orin. After you've dealt with her, you can loot her corpse to get her Netherstone as well as her personal weapons: Crimson Mischief and Bloodthirst.

Pass the Ability Checks to Save Your Captured Companion

Baldurs Gate 3 - Orin Charisma Check

If you decided to kill Orin before Gortash (or if you killed Sarevok), she will look to kill your abducted companion before the fight even begins. In order to save them, you will need to pass a Charisma Check that convinces Orin to fight you instead.

However, if you do plan to let your companion die, do note that the companions in your party will usually react negatively if you let Orin kill her captive. Consider the negative approval hit before letting the captured character die during the opening sequence of the fight.

Orin's Netherstone

Baldurs Gate 3 - Orins Netherstone

Once players loot the Netherstone-Pomelled Bloodthirst from Orin's body, they will receive Orin's Netherstone. If done during the fight, the Netherstone will be automatically deposited into your inventory. However, if looted after the fight, a cutscene will play showing your character taking it from the Orin's dagger.

Crimson Mischief

Crimson Mischief can be obtained by defeating Orin inside the Temple of Bhaal. Once you kill her Slayer Form, you will be able to loot the legendary shortsword, Crimson Mischief, from her body.

Bloodthirst

Bloodthirst can be obtained by looting the Netherstone-Pomelled Bloodthirst from Orin's corpse. After the cutscene plays out, you will be given both Orin's Netherstone as well as Orin's legendary dagger, Bloodthirst.
