Collecting Cards, Battle Passes, And Being Unable To Enjoy Anything Anymore
I can't take it anymore. Why does everything need a battle pass? Why do new card sets drop every month? Why am I constantly bombarded with reminders that my hobbies have time constraints? I'm always told I must move quickly if I want to finish the latest Fortnite or Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 battle pass, complete a Pokémon TCG set, or find the Lightning card I so desperately want from the Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy collaboration before Wizards of the Coast moves on to the next big collaboration. That sentence is only half as exhausting as my hobbies have become. Perhaps I haven't been paying attention, but it feels like all of my hobbies are constantly telling me that time is a finite resource and I don't have enough of it. Never mind the frustrating ads that pop up every time I boot up Fortnite or Call of Duty, reminding me that the season ends in XX days and I will miss out on this skin and that cosmetic if I don't finish it in time. The passage of time and the way companies move from one thing to the next is a reality check that my hobbies, despite how much I love them, are powered by capitalistic intent with sights aimed directly at my wallet. I thoroughly enjoyed playing Marvel Snap, the mobile card game featuring basically every hero and villain from Marvel's comic book universe, but I couldn't keep up with its monthly seasons. Not only was Marvel asking for my money each month, but the meta changed as frequently with the introduction of new cards, and the second you opt out of that loop, you lose. I thoroughly enjoyed playing Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, the mobile card-collecting game based on one of my all-time favorite franchises. However, after initially having months to finish up the first set – Genetic Apex – The Pokémon Company began a monthly cadence of expansion releases. I quickly dipped out once I recognized the frustration and heartbreak I felt with Snap was coming here, too. Sure, you can still collect previous expansions, but sticking to an older expansion while a new one is in the spotlight means I'll never catch up. Like Snap, the meta is everything in Pocket. So I deleted the game from my phone. Even off my phone, this cadence I could never hope to keep up with is apparent. I jumped into collecting physical Pokémon cards with the release of the 151 set a few years back. It seemed simple enough: it's just the first 151 Pokémon, and it was heavily steeped in nostalgia, revisiting the monsters and card designs I grew up with in the late 1990s. Imagine my surprise when, at the same time, The Pokémon Company releases a new set – and then another one, and another. Do I continue chasing 151 (mind you, the Pokémon card community is plagued with people flipping sets to chase profit, ruining it for those genuine card collectors), or do I hop over to the new set, or do I buy a new binder and try to do both? Exhausted and overwhelmed, I stopped. I haven't played Fortnite in months, save for the occasional match with my nephew when he needs my help completing a quest, because I can't bring myself to commit to completing the battle pass in time. "Wesley, you can just play the game and ignore the battle pass!" Have you played Fortnite?? The entire experience is built around that dang battle pass – the XP system, the collaborations, the in-game items and locations. It all funnels back into, "Wow, you should really purchase and complete this battle pass. You don't want to be the loser without this Power Ranger skin, do you?" I'll admit, for years, that FOMO kept me coming back to complete every single battle pass, even when I cared little for the Level 100 cosmetic waiting for me at the end of it. But not this time, Fortnite. I just can't do it anymore. The same goes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, though I hopped off that train far sooner than Fortnite's. I've never played Magic: The Gathering, but I have spent nearly $400 collecting cards from its Final Fantasy set that launched earlier this year. I adore Final Fantasy. It's one of my all-time favorite game series; there are multiple Final Fantasy XIII cards. With how many of my colleagues who play Magic, I have known for years that it was only a matter of time before I jumped in, and the Final Fantasy collaboration was my moment. I collected so many cards, waited in line at various stores before they opened to purchase bundles, and am slowly teaching myself how to play the game. I was excited to visit my local card shop and play against other people using Final Fantasy cards. Already, though, Wizards of the Coast has released the Edge of Eternities, an original set, and Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender cards are coming soon. Yes, I can absolutely still play and enjoy my Final Fantasy decks. But assuming I get as hooked as I think I will on Magic: The Gathering, am I really going to start collecting Spider-Man cards and then Avatar cards soon, all while catching up on Edge of Eternities, which I have ignored while trying to collect Final Fantasy cards? No. I refuse. I know where this leads. I have drawn my line in the sand. It's simple: I just cannot engage with the constant onslaught of releases anymore. I even get notifications from Kindle about my monthly reading achievements (that I don't care about) and a coffee shop app that promises a free drink if I buy this many drinks in a week (I won't). I don't know when it happened, but every single thing I love is demanding more and more of my time and money, and it has sucked the enjoyment out of them. I don't even have an uplifting thesis statement to end on. It just sucks. I'm tired of collecting cards; I'm tired of battle passes in everything; I'm tired of having to enjoy my hobbies by following a monthly cadence I can't keep up with. These things are supposed to be fun, but I'm just tired.

9-Star Difficulty Monsters Head to Monster Hunter Wilds
At the end of July 2025 , Capcom announced it would add the planned increased difficulty and end-game content update in August 13, 2025 instead of September 2025, and now Director Yuya Tokuda talked more about the 9-star monsters heading to Monster Hunter Wilds . These monsters will show up alongside the set of new quests and talismans in the game . You do need to be at HR 100 to start seeing them. However, once you do, you can get Glowing Stone appraisal items that can be turned into Appraised Talismans.
Initially, the version 1.021 Monster Hunter Wilds update announcement noted there would be “new level of quest difficulty” and “new rewards system (talisman),” with the nine-star monsters not even mentioned. Nine of them will appear initially. All of them will be Tempered Monsters. Based on the initial teaser photo, it looks like these will be Jin Dahaad, Lagiacrus, Mizutsune, Nu Udra, Gore Magala, Rathian, Rey Dau, Seregios, and Uth Duna. More will join them in September 2025 with Title Update 3. The Appraised Talismans they drop will have random skills, including weapon and armor ones, and decoration slots. Those can’t be upgraded, however. In general, hunting rewards will also be adjusted for them.
Tokuda also went over additional changes that will come alongside the higher difficulty changes for HR 100 hunters in Monster Hunter Wilds . He started by mentioning meal effects will last longer, to balance things out since hunts will take longer. The announcement noted that Apex Predators will appear in regions even when when there isn’t the inclemency. When Title Update 3 arrives, those nine-star monsters could crash Event Quests. There will also be more instances where we’ll face larger groups, and he specifically mentioned “hunts targeting packs of monsters.”
Here are some additional screenshots Capcom shared showing changes:

We also know the other two additions coming in the patch this week. There will be weapon balance adjustments and various improvements and adjustments coming this week too.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and nine-star difficulty monsters arrive in a patch on August 13, 2025.

Unicorn Overlord Yahna Figure Debuts in 2026
Back in October 2024, Kotobukiya revealed a Unicorn Overlord Yahna figure, and now pre-orders are open. It costs 23,100円 / $189.99 . It will show up in Japan first, with a February 2026 launch window there. The North American debut is set for March 2026.
This version of Yahna is a 1/7 scale figure. She’ll stand at almost 10 inches tall (253mm). She’s wearing her basic costume in the series, and she carries a staff behind her back with a bat shape. If someone buys directly through Kotobukiya, then a second face plate that features her with a different type of smile is included.
Here are some of the first photos of the Unicorn Overlord Yahna figure Kotobukiya shared. Two of the photos compare her base face plate with the bonus one offered through Kotobukiya.

This is the fourth of the Kotobukiya Unicorn Overlord figures. First, the company announced Scarlet . That was followed by the sisters Eltolinde and Rosalinde . We also know the fifth one will be Melisandre .
Kotobukiya isn’t the only company making figures of characters from the game. Apex-Toys has two on the way. They are of Berengaria and Virginia.
Unicorn Overlord is on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X, and we will see the Yahna figure come to Japan in February 2026 and the US in March 2026.

Everything Announced At The July Nintendo Partner Direct
Today's Nintendo Partner Direct showcased a rather dense line-up of upcoming third-party games for Switch platforms. Specifically, the Year 1 line-up for Switch 2 received a shot in the arm with several confirmed new titles. If you missed the Direct live, we rounded up every announcement to offer a quick summary of what you missed. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection - 2026 (Switch 2) The next entry in the popular RPG spin-off series tells the tale of two nations gearing up for war, until the birth of a Rathalos, long-thought extinct, gives hope. Unfortunately, it’s born with a twin, signaling a prophecy heralding these beasts as harbingers of civil war and destruction. In addition to Switch 2, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is also coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Once Upon A Katamari - October 24 (Switch) This brand new entry in the popular (and strange) series sees the Prince rolling his signature ball through time itself. To rebuild the night sky, you’ll roll up anything and everything across various eras, such as the Jurassic Period, the Ice Age, and historic Japan. Once Upon a Katamari features new tools such as a magnet to attract nearby objects, a competitive online multiplayer mode called KatamariBall, and a new, original soundtrack. Thankfully, plenty of retuning tracks will appear, as well. Just Dance 2026 Edition - October 14 (Switch) If you’ve been looking for a Switch game that lets you dance like a maniac to Smash Mouth’s “All Star”, Just Dance 2026 has you covered. The next entry in the annual rhythm game features 40 new tracks, including Dua Lipa’s “Houdini”, Madonna’s “Hung Up”, and One Republic’s “Counting Stars”. You can also grab a dance partner in the new co-op party mode. Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero - November 14 (Switch 2, Switch) The 2024 fighting game and new entry in the Tenkaichi series is instantly transmitting to Switch platforms. Now you can bring all 180+ characters (most of which are probably variations of Goku) anywhere you go. Additionally, a free update allows owners of the Switch version (physical and digital) to play the game on Switch 2 with visual enhancements. Plants vs Zombies: Replanted - October 23 (Switch 2, Switch) The original Plants vs Zombies is receiving a much-welcomed and overdue remaster. Replanted cleans up the 2009 classic with crisp HD visuals, meaning the engrossing tower-defense action looks better than ever. You can battle zombies alongside or against a friend in new local co-op and competitive modes. EA Sports FC 26 - September 26 (Switch 2) EA’s flagship soccer game is coming to Switch 2, bringing with it overhauled gameplay, new Manager Live Challenges, and more to the hybrid platform. Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac - September 26 (Switch 2, Switch) Following in the footsteps of its 2022 predecessor, Pac-Man World 2 is getting the modernized Re-Pac treatment. The 2002 sequel has been rebuilt from scratch with improved graphics and gameplay. Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles - September 30 (Switch 2, Switch) Square Enix provided a new look at its upcoming remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, this time focusing on the game’s story and improved presentation, such as its full voice acting. Persona 3 Reload - October 23 (Switch 2) The 2024 remake of Persona 3, the Persona game that arguably established its format and the current popularity the series appreciates, is making its way to Switch 2. Since its release on other platforms, the game has received some substantial DLC, and it’s unclear if the Switch 2 version will include that content. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment - Winter (Switch 2) Nintendo didn’t have much new to offer for the next game in the Hyrule Warriors franchise, other than a new trailer with new gameplay. We don’t know when it will release beyond the vague Winter window, but for Zelda fans, there was some interesting wording. They specifically used the word “canonical” when referring to the game’s story. The previous Hyrule Warriors game, Age of Calamity, was more or less not canon, which led to a very underwhelming conclusion for the game.
So far, the trailers for Age of Imprisonment have not featured Link at all, which, considering the timeline of the game, makes sense. But the tease at the end of the trailer could potentially be a reference to the Ancient Hero. I won’t go into detail on what that means here, but if you don’t mind some very, very late game (like well after you’ve beaten the game) spoilers for Tears of the Kingdom, you can head here. Madden NFL 26 - August 14 (Switch 2) The annual football game finally returns to Nintendo hardware. Madden NFL 26 launches on Switch 2 on August 14. Footage shown during the presentation offered the first look at gameplay on Switch 2. You can check out the trailer above. Chillin’ by the Fire - July 31 (Switch 2) Arguably, one of the stranger announcements made during the partner showcase. The oddly titled, but undeniably accurate, Chillin’ by the Fire tasks players with building and maintaining a campfire. You can also invite friends to hang out via cha,t and if they have a camera, they’re faces can float around with you. Apex Legends - August 5 (Switch 2) Respawn Entertainment’s popular free-to-play battle royale game is coming to Switch 2, and it is arriving soon. The game will be available on August 5 to coincide with the new season and will feature a number of technical improvements over the Switch version. Hela - 2026 (Switch 2) In Hela, players control a mouse gathering materials to create a cure for their witch. The game looks adorable and will feature online co-op. No release date was offered, though, but we can apparently expect it next year on Switch 2. Star Wars Outlaws - September 4 (Switch 2) Ubisoft’s open-world Star Wars game arrives on Switch 2 on September 4. Gameplay of the Switch 2 version of the game was shown, and it appears some downgrades have been made for the game to run on Nintendo’s console. Cronos: The New Dawn - September 5 (Switch 2) Cronos: The New Dawn launches on Switch 2 on September 5. You can read more about that announcement here . Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 - November 11 (Switch 2) The remakes of the first two Yakuza games are coming to Switch 2, which makes sense considering the consoles launched with Yakuza 0. Both games launch on Switch 2 on November 13. They can be purchased separately or in a bundle. Both will have enhanced graphics, improved framerrates, and additional language support. During the showcase, Nintendo spent the penultimate announcement section highlighting a number of games back-to-back in quick succession. Goodnight Universe, the next game from the creators of Before Your Eyes that follows a telekinetic baby, is coming to Switch and Switch 2 on November 11. NBA Bounce, which looks like an NBA Jam-esque arcade basketball game where you can play as team mascots, is coming to Switch on September 26. Hello Kitty Island Adventure’s Wheatflour Wonderland DLC is coming to Switch this Fall. Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 edition today. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is releasing on Switch on August 29, and a playable demo is available now. Nintendo also offered a reminder that Borderlands 4 launches on Switch 2 on October 3. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - 2026 (Switch 2) Square Enix is readying a new HD-2D game, but as opposed to its previous efforts like Octopath Traveller or the Live A Live remake, this game is an action-RPG. The game follows the titular Elliott and his fairy friend Faie as they battle with various close-and long-range weapons across the world of Philabieldia. The game will offer local co-op where a second player can control Faie. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales launches on Switch 2 on 2026. Octopath Traveller 0 - December 4 (Switch 2, Switch) The next Octopath game, with a “Zero” subtitle, is coming to Switch 2 on December 4. You can read more about that game here .

Unicorn Overlord Berengaria and Virginia Figure Prototypes Appear
As part of the Apex-Toys Wonder Festival 2025 Summer reveals, the company showed off its updated Unicorn Overlord Berengaria and Virginia figure prototypes again . They both are much further along in development this time around. Each is part of the LimePie line-up.
Both the Unicorn Overlord Berengaria and Virginia figure prototypes ended up being fully painted at this event. This means each one could be close to pre-orders opening. As such, it is likely we could see them either in late 2025 or early 2026.
Each of these figures will be 1/8 scale. This means they’ll be between seven and eight inches tall. The Virginia one last appeared back in October 2024 . Meanwhile, the Berengaria showed up at WonFes 2025 Winter in February 2025. Each of them wear their notable costumes from when we first meet them in the game, and both feature an active, combat-ready pose.
Here’s how the two look so far:

These are two of many Unicorn Overlord figures. Some past ones included Melisandre , Yahna , Rosalinde , Eltolinde, and Scarlett .
Unicorn Overlord is on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X, and we will likely see the Berengaria and Virginia figure pre-orders open in the next few weeks.
