Despite Setting High Expectations, Players Dubbed Todd Howard’s Starfield “aggressively average” Vowing to Not Play It Again

Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield was their first new IP in over twenty-five years. The studio first explored the idea of developing a space-themed game in the 1990s, however, the development of Starfield properly started after the release of 2015’s Fallout 4. The game was doomed by delays but was finally released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023. The game is widely regarded as one of the best space-themed games ever made, though not everyone is a fan of it.

A viral post on Reddit recently asked gamers all over the world to talk about games they will never play and one of the most upvoted replies was about Starfield. Many gamers agreed and listed their reasons why they believe Starfield is an average game, something that Bethesda developers will never admit.

Gamers called Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield an average game

Despite winning awards, Starfield still hasn’t managed to convince many gamers that it is an engaging action role-playing game. A post on the r/gaming subreddit asked players to talk about games they will never play. A player then pointed out that Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield is an “aggressively average” video game.

Most players pointed out that there is nothing special about Starfield as most of them played the game once and have not touched the game since then. Bethesda games are known for their replayability factor, however, Starfield isn’t exciting enough to convince players to try it out again.

Even the new DLC, Shattered Space, couldn’t convince players to return to the game, but this doesn’t mean that the game is mediocre. Opinions can be subjective, so players who love space exploration would find Starfield an exciting game, but for others, it may just be another regular action role-playing game. Starfield isn’t a bad game, it just becomes really bland after one point.

Is Starfield really Bethesda’s most innovative title?

On many occasions, Bethesda’s developers have pointed out that Starfield is the studio’s most innovative title, however, many believe that devs tried to make Starfield similar to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in terms of game design. Even with the Shattered Space DLC, Bethesda failed to address many big issues.

Initially, when it was announced that Starfield was a space exploration game, many expected to actually explore space using a spaceship, however, the game doesn’t really allow players to do that. A simple fast-travel mechanic comes into play when players want to travel between planets, this completely eliminates the “space exploration” concept. In fact, some players have managed to create something called “Supercruise” using mods but Bethesda must develop a properly optimized system.
