Rockstar Games is renowned for its blockbuster titles and meticulous attention to detail, always managing to shatter through the boundaries set by other games. With its upcoming title GTA 6, it is looking to offer an expansive map, intricate storytelling, and innovative gameplay mechanics, aiming to draw millions of players into its virtual world.
However, it looks like the studio has again found itself in another controversy. This time the controversy stems from an allegation that the company is offering an embarrassingly low amount for securing music rights in their highly anticipated title. This has created quite a buzz among the community and players are calling out the studio.
Rockstar Games always looks to set new standards in open-world design, narrative depth, and interactive gameplay. If the studio dedicates great resources and commitment during development, Grand Theft Auto 6 is not going to be just another entry in a beloved franchise, it will be one of the most significant releases in gaming history.
To achieve that, the game needs to have everything on point, especially the music. Everyone expects the game’s soundtrack to be a dynamic and integral part of its world, with diverse radio stations available on vehicles, enhancing the immersive quality of its lively cityscape.
However, amid all the excitement and speculation, a controversy has risen highlighting that Rockstar Games is offering very low compensation for music rights, lower than many people anticipated (given the popularity of the game). Due to this, many fans are questioning whether or not the studio understands the value that music brings to its game.
After seeing the allegation on X, fans and critics have raised concern over a broader conversation; the reality behind licensing in the gaming industry and the major undervaluation of music rights.
I was recently contacted by my publishers on behalf of Rockstar Games re the possibility of using Temptation on the new Grand Theft Auto 6

Naturally excited about the immense wealth that was about to head my way, I scrolled to the bottom of the email re the offer…
The composer expected a bigger payment as the music is going to be used in one of the most anticipated and biggest gaming titles of recent times. But after seeing the amount, they were disappointed, to say the least.
IT WAS $7500 – for a buyout of any future royalties from the game – forever…

To put this in context, Grand Theft Auto 6 grossed, wait for it…
$8.6 BILLION
Ah, but think of the exposure…
Go fuck yourself
Many people are saying this is absurd and praising the composer for not selling at such low prices.
Bro do not sell for that… good thing you didn’t sell

While some are disappointed and say this is stealing.
Complete theft

After seeing the post many people are angry and questioning whether or not the studio actually cares about the art and the artists who make these games feel alive.
Even though Rockstar has not responded to the allegations yet, it is clear that with the fast-growing gaming industry, balancing creative integrity with financial decisions will become increasingly difficult and crucial.
For a studio that is this huge and has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of the genre and delivering exceptional gaming experiences that sometimes surpass the player’s expectations, the resolution of this issue will be closely watched by the whole community. If these allegations are repeated, it will for sure impact the reputation of future projects and the studio.
As the gaming community fully understands these reports, many believe these types of issues extend beyond GTA 6 to the whole gaming industry. This situation has become the fuel that has ignited a broader discussion about the value of creative contributions and the financial realities of licensing.
In the end, most players will likely forget about this soon but the main issue will continue to pass from one game to another, highlighting the need for regulation for these distributions and exchanges.
