Bai Xi refers to the general term for ancient Chinese song and dance acrobatics, where "Bai" indicates a rich variety. It was popular during the Han Dynasty and became prevalent in the Tang Dynasty. The "Yuefu" poetry collection states: "Since the Qin and Han dynasties, there have been various performances, collectively known as Bai Xi, also referred to as scattered music." This tradition has been passed down through the ages.

Nuo Mian are masks representing gods, Buddhas, and ghosts in Nuo opera. Nuo opera, also known as ghost opera, evolved from the Nuo dance in Nuo rituals and is performed during specific festivals as a form of sacrificial ceremony. Nuo rituals originated in the Xia and Shang dynasties or even earlier, aimed at driving away evil spirits, preventing epidemics, and bringing good fortune.

Background

The description of the Kun Zha set, "Only say the scriptures are easy to obtain; on the western road, even insects bully people!" comes from Chapter 72 of "Journey to the West":

"Bees and wasps swarm in the sky, dragonflies dance on the ground. Honey ants chase at the forehead, and bees sting at the eyes. The biting flies swarm around, and the cow dung flies buzz up and down. A dark cloud approaches, startling the gods and ghosts. Zhu Bajie panicked and said, 'Brother, only say the scriptures are easy to obtain; on the western road, even insects bully people!' The Monkey King replied, 'Brother, don’t be afraid, quickly go and fight!' Zhu Bajie said, 'They swarm all over my head and face, and I’m covered with layers of bites; how can I fight?'"

Kun Zha: Similar to insects. The etymology suggests it refers to insects. The character "Zha" indicates a crawling appearance. The "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" notes: "Zha means to move slowly. All living creatures that move are called Zha."

Yun Li is mentioned in Chapter 23 of "Journey to the West": "Although living in a mountain villa, it is not of the most vulgar kind; I believe it is worthy of the elders if they are willing to open their hearts, let their long hair down, and become a family head here, wearing fine silk and brocade, better than that of a clay bowl and coarse clothes, snow shoes and cloud hats!"

There is also a description of "straw hats" in "Zun Sheng Ba Jian": "There are two types: one is called Yun Li, made of fine rattan, measuring about two feet and four inches, covered with black silk, with eaves to shield from wind and sun. The other is called Ye Li, made of bamboo strips, covered with dense leaves, which has a very ethereal quality. Both items are valued for their lightness."

The Monkey King went to unpack his bundle and found several coarse pancakes inside, which he handed to his master. He also saw a bright, beautiful cotton robe and a golden hat. The Monkey King asked, "Is this clothing and hat from the East?"

Tang Seng casually replied, "This is what I wore when I was young. Once this headband is worn, one will recite scriptures without being taught; once this clothing is worn, one will perform rituals without being instructed."
