Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is no doubt the mightiest defender of the Earth as well as the smartest Avenger. Known for his wits and resourcefulness, the character has gone up against some of the most formidable villains and characters of the Marvel Universe in the comics.
While he has emerged victorious most of the time, Iron Man once found himself against Sentry, aka one of Marvel’s most powerful characters. But their epic showdown was not as anyone would have expected, for despite having no superpowers of his own, Tony Stark made even a superhero with the power of a million exploding suns kneel in front of him.
Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man is as if the comic book version came alive. Known for his resourcefulness, both the comic book version and the live-action version have shocked fans with their surprising feats. However, it was the comic book version of Iron Man that did the most astonishing deed by defeating Sentry, a character widely hailed as one of the strongest Avengers and Marvel characters.
In Iron Man #9-11 by Daniel and Charles Knauf, Scott Hanna, Patrick Zircher, VC’s Joe Caramagna, and Studio F’s Antonio Fabela, Tony Stark found himself in jeopardy when he came face-to-face with Sentry. Since there was no way that he could have defeated him in hand-to-hand combat or using his groundbreaking tech, Stark did what he does best- used his wits to overpower Sentry.
Stark hacked into the C.L.O.C.- a system created by Reed Richards to help Sentry navigate and resolve crises around the world. Using his hacking skills, Stark overloaded the system with Sentry getting thousands of cries for help and having his psychological health deteriorate by the minute.
This allowed Iron Man enough time to escape, thus proving that he doesn’t always need to use his power or tech to make an escape or defeat his enemies for his wits and intelligence are enough to make him one of the mightiest Avengers of the Earth. Furthermore, this epic comic book event further proves that if RDJ’s Iron Man ever had to go against Sentry, he’d effortlessly emerge victorious.
Iron Man may have countless advanced and state-of-art technology and weapons but his intelligence will always be his greatest gift and mightiest ability. He may not even possess raw strength like most of his fellow Avengers, but his unparalleled resourcefulness and ingeniousness will always give him an edge over the rest.
A driving force behind his team members’ success, his strategic mind has always helped in saving the day. Whether it defeating the Ten Rings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or defeating Sentry in the comic books, he has proven time and again wherever he is and whatever the circumstance, he will always find one way or the other to win.
Perhaps the best event to prove this was in the MCU when Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark formulated the time heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones and defeat Thanos, proving that his intellect and understanding go well beyond that of his fellow Avengers. Thus, Iron Man may not be the most powerful, mightiest or greatest, but he sure is the smartest Avenger and Marvel character ever created.
